I have a 1940 M with an overdrive. The tractor has had some updates before I got it. Such as disk brakes and the smaller oil filter. It has an overdrive with a lever on the left side. I was wondering what kind it is. The tractor has a 4 speed and with the lever foward all the speeds are slower. Thanks

The lambert brakes work awesome if they're in good shape. I have the original manual that came with the kit if anyone needs it. I just recently found and purchased a NOS complete double disk kit (in the original wood crate) and so I have my old lambert setup left as spare parts if anyone needs some parts or the whole setup. A couple of the disks are bad and it would be ideal to replace all four of them. Case/IH still offers them. Ausco, the company that sold them (Ausco-Lambert) is still in business and manufactures the disks, the ramp balls, and actuator springs I believe for Case/IH. The extra kit I have needs to be turned, get new disks, and replace one of the splined hubs (I know of two sources for the hub) and they should work great. These were sold as "self energizing" which basically means its almost like having power brakes... it requires very little pedal pressure to stop the tractor. Hit them hard and you can make it come to a halt pretty darn quickly. The brake drums I have are in awesome shape as well.

I've done a lot of research on these brakes so if anyone has any questions or would like to see come pictures of them, let me know.

Lanny, that lever is part of the set up for the Hiesler Overdrive (9 Spd) not to be confused with the M&W 9 Spd transmission option. In the picture above of my M also with Hiesler OD, you can see what the rest of the linkage looked like. The Disc brakes you have are Lambert Disc brakes and you will find that the IH replacement discs will not fit on the splines. You will have to specify "For Lambert" if you need to replace the discs. Lambert was another after market company that provided these to IH dealers and possibly the factory however, I'm sure about the factory.

You have to be careful about the Hiesler as it tends to overspeed the Liftall pump and will blow the seals out of the pump in a hurry. Dad always knew when my brother and I had been sneeking the use of the OD. Big old oil spot on the machine shed floor was a dead give-away!

Was talking about an available M Friday night. 9 speed was mentioned. How do you get 9 speeds? Is high/high locked out or something?
Thanks

Farmer Bob-
Thanks for correcting me. I didn't know the disc brakes weren't IH either.
By the way, looks like you've a slick old M.

Wasn't correcting you David, only pointing out there were at least two different mfgrs of overdrives for these old work horses. My M is not the one I grew up on but it could be it's sister and it did come from up by Clear Lake, IA. I trailered it out to the Northwet in '98. She's a good old M.

I guess correcting was the wrong word. How about "enlightening"?
Thanks,
David :)

Where in SW Iowa are you? I'm in Hopkins, Mo, about 10 miles south of Bedford, IA and 30? from Clarinda, IA.

Someone will probably correct me- I"ve only heard of M&W overdrives. My grandfather"s H has an M&W 9-Speed.
Someone did a great deed by putting on disc brakes, and a spring seat.
Hope I helped you.

I live in New Market.
Why do they call it a 9 speed? With my 4 speed trans. that would only give me 8 speeds.

'40 M and '46(?) H? We advertised them, and I think someone said they would take them, but they're still in the shed, ready for someone.

I'm sure you can, I got this one in good shape off of a classified ad in '99. Might check with OEM Tractor Parts or other suppliers.

Yep, that's me. Sent him some money for down payment, and have been busier than a cat during corn shelling ever since, called him the other day and told him I would be up later. Your dad is a super nice fella. Next time you advertize something though, you need to tell him:-) I called him and he didn't know what I was talking about. He said well, I guess they're for sale only I didn't know it. We had a good visit. I WILL be up and get them as soon as I can get loose. Thanks, Harley

Okay. Great to hear three generations on the farm. My folks live up in Oakland, Iowa, and have 180 acres, but not enough to start farming when I was old enough so I went into the work force. Now I have a place of my own down here in the Ozarks around Springfield, Mo. and it's too rocky to raise anything but cane and pasture, but I sure do miss the plowing and discing in the spring and fall.. Guess they don't even do that anymore. One trip over the field and they're done. Good to hear from you and maybe I'll see you when we're up there. Later, Harley
