When trying to crank my super a the starter locked. What is the best method to get it unlocked? What causes a starter to lock? Thank you for your help.

Easiest and safest is to just loosen the bolts that hold the starter to the clutch housing. wiggle the starter a little and retighten the bolts. I think pulling the tractor, etc. with the starter locked up may cause damage.

The quickest fix is use the hand crank all you have to do is bump the engine a little. We didn't have much trouble with the Super A, But the H was very bad to lock. If we could we would just put it in 5th and rock it. We carried the cranks on all tractors all the time.

When it locks, pulling the tractor forward while in a forward gear will jam the starter drive/flywheel teeth even tighter together. Might cause additional damage. Putting the tractor in the highest forward gear and pulling it backward will unlock it nicely. The easiest (temporary) fix is to loosen the starter bolts enough to wiggle the starter. The drive will retract and the starter can be retightened. No need to disconnect the battery cable.

Why would that jam it tighter when you pull it the fly wheel will pull away from the starter drive, same as the crank method which I know will work because I have done it many many times.

As Redgreen said, put it in high gear and rock it, if that doesn't help loosen the starter mounting bolts and try again. Starters lock because the bevel on the ends of the teeth of the ring gear or the starter drive becme worn and they lock end to end instead of engaging. If it starts happening regularly the starter drive is easy to replace if it's the problem. If it's the ring gear on the flywheel, then it needs replaced, or it can be repaired by using a Dremel tool through the starter opening to reshape the bevels on the teeth. If you go the Dremel rout there will be 2 places 180 degrees from each other where the teeth are worn due to the engines always stopping between compression strokes.

Many times you can put the tractor in high gear and rock the wheels and it will pop loose. I have a Farmall 350 that locks up once in a while and I have to loosen the starter bolts on it, then it will come loose.
