I think I missed something. Is this 966 an old tractor of yours?! You made the comment of waiting 20 yrs for it. Boy I sure hope it is! That is really cool. And cattle again? Boy I miss the calves running on the hillside come spring but winter and livestock.. Glad you will be headen somewhere you can streach out though. I HATE HATE HATE HATE living in town. Good luck to you.

Mornin' Bill,

No, it isn't the same one, couldn't hope for that; but I really think it is in as good a shape as I'll ever hope to find and as close as I can hope to get to the old one.

On the farmsale in '83, the 966 was the next to last thing to sell, then went my 'heart-throb' Gleaner combine. After I had popped the tractor off for the crowd to hear, I had to go in the house. Just couldn't handle it any longer.

But, by everything that is holy, I'm comin' back, even if it is just one tiny, little step at a time.

And this time by Gawd, there will be no bankers allowed in my affairs! :>)

Later Pard,

Allan

Well I am even more happy to hear that story. I applaud you and I have some one to emulate. I am lucky never had to declare bankrupcy but I came close and sold everything I had and at one point held down five part time jobs to pay everyone off. Saddest point of my life. I am 1 year 5 months from getting bankers off of my leg Their kinda like overly excited active dogs. Getting rid of bankers is a lot like trying to take off wet BVDs. Nebraska Cowman... Where have I seen that name?? My limmited dealings with him have spurred high regards here. He has been good to me and I see he has time to slow down for children. I'm sure he is a good man. You are lucky to have found him. There is nothing as right and visceraly good as living your dream even if you have to live a nightmare first. It'll be awhile before my wife understands my dream when I could make so much more money elsewhere. Once I am set here. I will move to the coutry again. My farm is 50 miles from me so it is once or twice a month at best. I will not sell it and all 100acres is free and clear. I need something closer and will look for it once that wet pair of undies is finaly out O my shorthairs. Thanks for every thing Allan! Bill By the way got that F-30 OOooobaby. Aint Purdy like your 966 but She smells of perfume and looks like a NewYork runway model to me.

Allan ,I truly am inspired by (at least my understanding of) what you are doing.Getting back out there and giving it a go. I just wish I would have had the foresite to take over my folks place. The timing was terrible, but in hindsite I don't think there is ever a good time.I am hoping to get some more land in the next few years and have already started to build up my machinery (as I can afford it).I don't have a real time table but hope to be done "working" for a living in the next 5 years, so I can "retire" to full time farming. Never really know how bad you miss it until you are away from it for awhile.I truly miss the cattle and the hogs.Working the soil in springtime is like a rebirth of sorts. The long hours at harvest time trying to get the crop in ahead of mother nature..... well I better get back at it so hopefully I too can realise my dream. Thanks for the inspiration. JohnG

Hi Jon,

I'm just a silly, bull-headed old man that wasted the better part of his life away, but let me tell you about some real, honest to goodness inspiration.

I first started coming on this board just a few years ago. Started noticing a guy puttin’ posts up that were just gut-level "true to life" and always seemed to make a heck of a lot of sense. Somehow, this ol’ guy always sounded just like my dad did back when I was a kid. He knew what he was talking about.

Started watchin' this guy. Read every word he put up and still do to this day. Can’t wait for him to come on in the morning.

And I don't wanna embarrass him or anything by putting out his name, but if you see a post that comes from a fella who calls himself the ‘Nebraska Cowman’, you’d better read him. This sounds kinda stupid I know, but this feller is kinda my elder statesman type hero. Ya just can't go wrong by listening to Howard.

He started with absolutely nothing and he made ‘er work from scratch out here in the desert of Nebraska; now that is nothing less than awe inspiring impressive!

He is the one that unknowingly & unwittingly got me back up on my horse, got me going again and this silly ‘come-back road’ I’m on now has been the best thing that ever happened to me. Thanks Howard!

Just my 2 cents,

Allan

wow Allan, I never knew.
I thought YOU were the guy with the money and all the brains.
And sometimes I wonder why we do it, why we want to fight the weather, fight the cows, fight the markets. All things we can't do nothin' about. Maybe it's the challange, maybe it's the adventure of being our own man, not having to answer to a boss or a clock; Or maybe it's the awesomeness of just being a part of the responsibility of feeding a hungry world.

All the money and all the brains?!

Are you smokin' left-handed cigarettes or some such thing? :>)

Yes, I've been so very fortunate to finally be making some headway. But, I've told you time and time again that you really don't know how lucky you are. I've envied you and what you have accomplished, since forever.

Well, except for that darned F2 Gleaner deal of yours. That one really torqued me off!! :>)

Allan, everyone on this board has been very helpful. I first found it while trying to get my brothers Ford 4000 Industrial running.Without the help from this board ,I'm sure it woukd have been in the scrap pile by now ,but today when I flip on the ignition and hit the starter she bellars to life every time(knock on wood). The help that has been so selfessly given to me is priceless ,and greatly appreciated. The reason what you are doing is such an inspiration to me is that your dreams seem to be the same as mine. You are just closer to your goal than I am.Can't wait for the day I can get back to it.I am not dumb enough to think I can ever do just farming for a living, but hopefully I won't have to spend 65 hours a week trying to scratch out a living working for someone else.Needless to say our experiences in life weren't the same ,but I think the goal of getting back out there and giving it a go are the same. I truly enjoy hearing of your victories as well as your defeats(as I'm sure most here do)Thank you JohnG

Allan

I lived my dream for about 20 years. It werent easy for the most part. Mostly fight with other family members. Well, mostly Dad and one sister. And then there was the bankers. Now I had a one fifth intrest in the family farm and equipment to operate it. If I would have had this same amount of money to buy a house in town I would have had to fight off the realtors. But try to buy some family farmland. Then a few years ago I got a dumb attack and sold out and moved south. 1000 miles away. No way to go back like you are doing. Well mabe if I win a lottery. Enuf of this. Been reading too many of Allans posts.

One bit of advice. You will make it on management and hard work. Take care of your Farmalls and they will take care of you.

Hi Guy,

No, I can't make it on "management and hard work". Didn't work last time and I sure wouldn't be able to again.

What I can do tho, is to take care of this business we now have and be able to have my little "toys" too because the business is mobile.

This is nothing but an oversized sandbox and is just a treat for me to be able to go out and smell the diesel smoke once again before my days run out. The wife can also have her Herefords that she has always wanted.

I have no expectations at all about making a living at farming, as I just can't do it.

But, rest assured however, that I will take very good care of my Farmalls! :>) Allan

Been down that road too. The eighties got me but later in the decade. Lost 100 year family farm, and 120m in equip. After twenty some years of hard trucking, bought back eleven acres of my farm, put up a new double wide, with a garage and shop to come. Got to have room to work on my D4,W9, and a basket case 1934 W30 McCormick Deering. Looking forward to it!!!

No I would not have been able to make it just by farming. I am an electrician by trade and a farmer at heart. And sometimes durn hard to get along with. Now retired.
