I'm working on a Super M. I have been told the charlynn pump on the power steering was one of the earliest models, (it sits up under the hood and can't be seen). It is weak. If standing still I can turn the steering but with a lot of work. If moving it works pretty good. I don't intend to put a loader on it so the power steering doesn't have to be perfect but I am trying to improve it. I've been told there are not parts to be located anywhere. Is this true?

There may not be anything wrong with your pump, the way you describe it is pretty much the way they worked. I have the Behlen system on my H with a loader. The assistance from the power steering is very minimal when standing still, but works great when moving. The engine RPMs also plays a key role in the function, the faster the engine is running, the greater the power assist. I have heard that the pump from a Ford truck can be used as a replacement if needed.

I have taken a ps pump off a Chev.p.up and mounted on a s.M under hood and you can't see it. Works great. I am going to mount ps pump from Isuzu p.up on my H as soon as I can find good used torq motor and mounts.

LT – Does your Super M has live hydraulics? If it does you can dispense with the belt drive pump entirely. Instead use a flow divider on the live pump to operate the Charlynn steering motor. We’ve got several Farmall, MM and Case tractors so equipped. The power steering works great even standing still and the motor idling.

Don’t have live hydraulics? You don’t necessarily need to use a Charlynn pump. I’ve seen Charlynn PS setups run from Behlen, Cessna and Saginaw (General Motors) belt drive pumps. So long as it has adequate flow, pressure and reservoir capacity, any belt-driven hydraulic pump will work (If memory serves the Charlynn motor needs 2 - 3 gpm @ 1,200 psi)

Hi LT,

Aren't they all like that? I thought that belt driven pump only put out something like 3gmp or something like that?

I've heard a lot of guys saying just what you describe about those systems and I always thought it was the norm; being a combination of the pump and the old type torque motor. Also, this is why IH switched to a piston driven actuator?

Dunno. Maybe someone will jump in here and enlighten us.

Allan

I mounted a ps pump off a Chev. pickup on a Super M under the hood, cann't see it,works good, turns at a idle sitting still. Some day I am going to mount pump off a Isuzu p.up on my H when I find good used torq motor and mountings.
