Aces, I have often thought of that question myself. I think I may be old enough a good opinion on that,, It is always a passion involved, Right?? In Pulling, we call it bragging rights, in our area, a nice restored Super MDTA is a conversation piece, not a hot rod. Most pullers, are tractors that are fence row specials, the people that find em, have the same passion to git r running as the ones who find them to restore to original. Pullers,, well we kinda gotta go against the grain, cause these tractors are not meant to haul grain anymore,, Most are parts and pieces, brought back to life, with technology that is unlocked, just like a Rubix cube, a puzzle. Just like finding the right precleaner jar for the ol M, I go looking for the IH part that will make my Hot rod 100% IH. and do something different. I dont know about 460 pullers situation, if hes killing 2 good tractors, or what have ya,, but if he has just parts n pieces,, Hmm, git the super glue, n duct tape,, see what goes together!! Like any other motorsport, there are enhanced versions far from what was meant to be, some dont like to see that happen to the equipment, I would say to that person, go out to a pull, and look that technology over,, they have bragging stories just like the guys who have the perfect original, or a big dollar tractor in demand. Its all about them not sitting in a pile, and rustin away. JMHO,, ChadS

Chad: Except you puller guys prove absolutely nothing. It's the 1456 that pulled a 24' cultivator 15,000 hours without an engine rebuild that proved something.

I hear ya on that! Dad has got a 70 or 71 IH 856. Has the DT407 at 7500 hours, (2500 on rebuild) Purrs like a kitten, roars like a lion, and yes, pulls a 24 ft Field cultivator in decent ground in hi 1st. Ran for years with that set up. I do still remember the day he hooked that up to the 856,, I said, I dont think so!! Well he proved me wrong!! I would have to say that pulling is a motorsport. Ehh, when I go pulling, I got nothing to prove to anyone, only to myself in what I know my tractor is capable of, and set it up, to do the work, I redesigned the tractor to perform. Balance, strategy, competition, hard work, equals bragging rights. Its not a money sport, belive me, I know,, LOL!! Yeah, the 24 ft field cultivator is a good example,, here is mine,, My 40 Farmall H pulling 6500lbs, in 3rd gear, and out pulling 9 other tractors,, winning the class, against some MM U's, Super M's Ih 450's Jd 70s, JDG thats just a short list of what it out pulled by 30 ft, in the 6500lb modified class. I was 20 when I did that,, I still am floatin in the clouds on that one,,, Have a good day! ChadS

I helped put a 466 in a 856 few years back,, yes they will fit. We used a bell housing adapter plate from a hydro series IH,, I think it was a 100?? anyways, it had the 466 with the small bellhousing and rearend. the rear engine plate bolts on the back of the 466,. and bolts into the 806-1456 bellhousing. Use the 66 series frame rails, and maybe build a custom built wide front end since it will be a puller. I have to think about what we did with the clutch and flywheel,, I know it was like a jigsaw puzzle piecing all the parts together for the clutch, but I know there was 2or 3 different clutch parts from 3 different IH tractors to make it all work with no modifications. Hardest part was to match the clutch splines to the clutch shaft, and finding the correct diameter clutch plate, ChadS

ih460puller I would have to say no it will not fit those 2 engines are much different, like the oil pumps the 466 oil pump is on the front of the crank where the 407 is on the side of the block.

1ve seen a 436 in a 1456. the guy said it was tough but worth it. he said the 407 was a hard starter and parts are far more avalable for the 466 414 and 436 engines. good luck!

No a 466 crank will not fit in a 407. If you want a 466 buy a 66 series tractor and do it. Don't destroy a 1456 there wasn't that many built. I'll take that 14 with the 407 anyday.

Yes, it will fit and several guys have done it. I think you simply need to lengthen the frame rails, and of course use the 66 series radiator cause the ports are on differnet sides. Otherwise, I agree with ihbrad, I would love to have a 1456. We have a 1256 and it is the best starting tractor on the farm in the winter, it and the 806. They have enormous life spans when taken care of. I guess if you are wanting to pull it, everyone says you can get more out of the 66 series engine than the 06-56 series, but I just feel IH was really at its best with the 1456. If you just have a 1456 with an engine out, and are wondering what to do with it, consider selling it to me. :) The 407 crank is going to be pricey, but you can find them reasonable, and if properly maintained, you are only going to have to do it once. Place a post on here and ask how many 407s are over 10000 hours without being touched, and I think you are going to get alot of responses. And many with considerably more hours than that. Of course you could also ask how many guys oh them with under 10000 hours just to kill time in the winter. Just my 2 cents. As far as the piston and sleeves, try Don's Diesel in Kansas. Very reasonable in my opinion.

Realized you had a two part question. I meant the 66 series engine would fit, not the crank.
