Some fellas get 6000 hours on a ta and some claim they needed two in the first season, sold the tractor and bad mouthed IH for a generation. I just bought a 766 with 3500 hours, never been opened and my first TA unit. How do I use the TA so it out lives me?

We own 2 1486, a 400, 450, super M-TA, used to have 1066, 1466, and 3588. All have TA"s. Proper adjustmnet is essential. Plus, it is designed to give extra torque when you need it. Hence the name. Leave the thing in the forward direct position, use only when you need the torque. Plus, never, never, never, ever, never use the TA as a brake to slow the tractor. We made this mistake with our 1486"s, otr the heck out of them.

My 85 year old neighbor who farmed with all farmalls since his 36 F-20 says. Farmall should have attached a coffee can to the dash ,every time you pull the torque put 5 bucks in the can. then you maybe could cover expencses.

Scruffy: Get yourself a manual and pay close attention to your maintainence, clutch and TA adjustments. Your 766 does not free wheel in low so you need not worry on that one. Shift it quick. When shifting in the higher gears I like to throttle up or down to compensate for the jolt of the quick shift. You will find most of your use under 7 mph.

Another quick observation, if Allan is within a 1,000 miles you best build a vault house the 766. Captain said he is just like an expectant father in the waiting room. He is worse, been there and done that 3 times, I don't ever remember getting that excited.

Scruffy,

Darnit! I gotta see this tractor.

1. Go to the "Tractor Photos" section over on the left side of this page.

2. "Add your Photo", (it will walk you thru the process).

Tell us when it is up; 'cause I'm pretty darned jealous of you and a 360D 766 with only 3500 hours! Wanna sell it? :>)

Allan

Allen, try to calm yourself. You are beginning to sound like an expectant father pacing in a busy 1960’s TV maternity ward, waiting, waiting, pacing, pacing… :>)

In addition to other posts, when you shift it, shift it all the way, don’t stop in the middle. Adjustment is important, also on the 66 and 86 series tractors, lubricate the linkage to make sure it doesn’t bind up preventing the valve from moving all the way to one position or the other.

Mornin' Shaggy,

Dunno, those hydraulic actuated T/As are pretty darned tough. Keep the hydraulic oil/filter serviced and use it or loose it, they say.

Hope your 766 is better than the one I went to look at two weeks ago. The thing had 3459 hours on it and it looked like it needed to be melted down and rebuilt from scratch.

I'll never understand people who treat equipment this way.

Allan

shift it quick and don't let it freewheel slowing down or going downhill.

Also, and I'm going by years of reading posts here, not personal experience, get a manual that will tell you how to keep it properly adjusted. It's a precision part. Wm
