IH 826 and 1026

Just curious about the "26" series IH tractors. Why did IH make an 826 and 1026 and not make them "56". Was an 826 bigger than a 756 but smaller than an 856? It was not a hydro, was it? What about a 1026, how big was it? Thanks in advance.

The reason for the 26 (not the only one or the most significant one, I sure wouldn't think) is that the 826 is indeed between the 756 and the 856. The 856 had the big 407 IH engine, and the 826 had the 358 German engine, which is obviously larger over the 756's 310 German. It kind of stood alone, and filled a gap for many mid to large scale farmers who felt a 756 was a bit light but they didn't need a workaholic like an 856. It was available in gear and hydro trannys. We have a gear one, and it is one of the best tractors we have ever owned. The 1026 was available only in hydro, but was basically an 856 hydro. I don't know why IH didn't make an 856 hydro, but I think it was because the 856 was IH's prize machine for a short period of time and they did not want to provide drastic differences in models for that tractor. Just my thoughts. My neighbor bought a 1026 hydro, and loved it so much he bought another one less than a year later. I'm going to test drive it some day.

I guess there's an interesting story behind the "26" series tractors, but I don't know what it is. I've heard that the 826 was built to compete with the Deere 4000, an econo-box tractor, but that doesn't make sense, because IH produced "Custom" versions of the 756 and 856, which were stripped-down to make them less expensive to buy. I am thinking that maybe they were made for the European market, but failed there for some reason.

The 826 was powered by the 358 German Diesel, and came in both gear and Hydro versions. The 1026 was powered by the 407 Diesel, and was hydro only.

I've recently found out that even though the 826 looks like a 756, they aren't the same. The 826's hood height is closer to the 856, even though it has the emblem in the center of the grille.
