Questions:

Will the engines interchange from a W-6 to a W-9?

What is the difference between the transmissions and the rear ends in a W-6 and a W-9?

If the W-6 transmissions and the rear end are the same as an M Farmall, what would be the equivalent to the W-9?

Any information on a W-6, W-9 or an I-6 or I-9 would be greatly appreciated.

The W-9 is a different animal (read BEAST) unto itself. The was not a FARMALL or row-crop version of the 9 as IH felt this version would not sell because the M was considered very large for its time.

Can't put my hands on the specific book right now (loaned out), but this book made a specific point to show the difference in the rear end castings between the smaller standards (W-4 and W-6)and the W-9 with the W-9 having a substantial amount more iron and not just in size. There is additional cross-webbing in the case giving the bull gears (finals) an almost separate compartment.

The W-9 had no follow-on Super version, however the WD-9 did starting in 1953 with the Super WD-9 at which time getting its mill popped out to 350 CID from 335 CID. The Super WD-9 was followed up with the 600 and 650 respectively.

Joe, No, the engines or transmissions will not interchange between a W6 and a W9. There is also no row crop equal to the W9. The W6 is a standard configuration with the same engine, transmission and rear end as the M. The W9 is a much beefier standard with a few versions such as WD9 (diesel) WR9 and WDR9 (rice specials) I9 and ID9 (Industrial). Also WR9S (rice special on factory steel). They were manufactured from 1940 through 1953 and were replaced with the W600 series andd then W650 series.

Engine and transmission parts interchange between the W6 and W9 is sort of like between the H and M, basically they are all different. As 5020 said, there is no row crop equivalent of the W9. An oversimplification is that the W9 is a king size version of the W6, which in turn is a king size version of the W4.

As far as I know, IH never made a W-9 in rowcrop form.
