I found a super MTA with a bad motor that I can buy pretty reasonable. But the motor is bad and I have an M with a good motor and a bad tranny. The motor from an M will work in a super MTA right??

Todd, If you split at the rear engine support, use the MTA flywheel and clutch assembly youwill be Ok in the rear, Don't know about timming cover.Incidently the rear engine support from a 39 M to a 63 560 has the same holes. In my case the drill template I made to put a 345 V8 in the 560 was the same one I used to V8 my M

Todd,

What's going on with the M's tranny? Is it completely lunched or what?

Maybe it would be just as easy to lift the cover on that one?

Allan

My old M has a big crack in the tranny down underneath on the right side about 6 inches away from where rhe axle housing bolts on to the transmision. I dont think I could weld it good enough to hold. I looked this smta over good today and it is in real good shape other than the motor that could be overhauled. I think I will call him tonight and see what he would take for it.

I'd think you might have to change the timing cover to put the later hydraulic pump on but I wouldn't swear to that. And of course you'd have less power but you probably won't miss it. As long as the block and heads are good, I don't see why you can't just bolt in the M motor and then later on redo the SMTA's origninal motor at your own pace.

The SMTA is a valuable tractor and you need to go thru the original motor to keep it that way as not a lot of them were built. You wouldnt put a 6cyl engine in a 55 CHEVY to replace a v-8.

I looked at the production numbers on this site. Is 2522 smta really how many were made? I did check on overhaul kit and it wasn"t that bad of a price.

That number is more like the number produced per month. Guy Fay's and Ken Updike's data books say 20000 plus.

Hi ya Todd,

Heck, that ought to shoehorn right in there, wouldn't it? Plus you have all those other goodies you get in the deal like the T/A, live hydraulics, disc brakes, etc?

Maybe ol' Harley will jump in here; he is always playing with those types.

Is this the one under your loader?

Later,

Allan

I don't know why it wouldn't, an M is an M is an M. You will have a little less poop, but you're not pulling the old girl to the max. with the loader anyway. My M is all the power I want on my Westendorf TA26 loader. Enough to kink the bucket when I tried lifting a tree root out anyway. Later, Harley
