This is going to be long. Ok here we go. My wife and I just bought 11 acres we are going to build on in the spring. I would like to finish mow about 6 acers of it. I have been trying to find a woods mower for my Super C but only one place in our area can even order them anymore. They want $1700 for the mower. $200 shipping and a fee to fit it to my tractor.$2000+. They keep trying to talk me into a three point pull behind but that's not what I want. I have a friend in Iowa that has an H with a mower on it that he mulchs leaves with and drives in the Iowa tractor ride. He bought the tractor after it was restored by a high school FAA project. I was looking up his number to call him to see if he would consider selling it and the phone rang and it was him...weird. He wanted to know If I would like to buy his H. After talking I offered him $2500 for it. He called back today and said he would like $300O for it. I stress this is a friend, I would rather loose the tractor than his respect. On the same hand I don't want to pay more than is resonalbe for it. When I go to Lowes or Home Depot and see what they are getting for plastic lawn tractors it seems fair. But I also see H's sell on here a lot less than that.I have attached a photo of the tractor, just ingnore my yahoo buddies cutting up on it. Thanks in advance for your advise.
Paul

Why not compromise and offer him $2750? Tell your friend that you've done some research and based on expert opinions of the subject you think it's a fair price for the tractor pictured.

Personally I think a belly mounted mower is best for finish cutting. Rigid 3-point mounted mowers do not track well in turns and will miss spots. They also do not float and will scalp over uneven terrain.

I just finished my first season with my Super A and 5ft Woods mower. Overall I'm very pleased. Finish quality is excellent. If you have large expanses of turf that is un-cluttered with plantings, the H should make short work of it. As Hugh mentioned, if you have to do a lot of close work around trees and such, you may find that a smaller tractor is better. I too have skinned up trees and exhaust parts, and plan to modify my muffler for next season so that it points forward instead of strait up. This may not work as I may end up with a face full of exhaust but I'm going to try it anyway for clearance.

I would also recommend turf tires on the rear and implement tires on the front, to minimize ruts and damage during tight turns. Good luck with your new property!

Sam :)

in my area (west ky) 3 seems a little pricey but if you know the tractor &whats been done to it that plays into it too. you say you know the guy is he the kind to be less than upright? just say 25 is what you can spend be business-minded try to stay friends h s are pretty common

Paul: One item I forgot this am, is be sure to match your mower to the workload. This one has caused me a bit of grief. Marg. and I grow a vegetable garden about 100' by 100'. Mixed with the vegetables we have rows of annual flowers. The predominate flower has been sweet peas. Marg. has harvested her own seed for years, selecting the colors she likes.

With the Woods mower I found myself mowing ground I never mowed with old mower. Mowed right up to edge of garden, even mowed down crops like beans, peas, lettuce, etc. as they were done. We had two rows of sweet peas; one staked with netting for peas to climb on. I wasn't about to build another fence and wanted to prove a point that sweet peas will grow and climb on themselves, so I planted a row in a band about 15" wide. She complained all summer about this planting proceedure, how it was such a mess. So one day in mid Sept., mowed the grass, mowed down cucumbers, yellow beans, and since this band planting of sweet peas was such a mess, I mowed them down as well. Turns out these sweet peas had flowers and seeds she wanted to harvest. In 39 years of married life, I don't think she has ever been as annoyed with me on any issue as she was on the mowing down of those sweet peas. By now it has become a bit of family humor, how a 62 year old male should have enough work for his mower. Get that one right, make sure you are done mowing when the mowing is done.

Seems awful high for any H regardless of condition. Give me $3000.00 and I'll find you somethiong much more suitable for you for your 11 acres.

I've been mowing my yard for around ten years with my father in laws H with a woods under it and I love it. I like it so much I'm just finishing up restoring a H to use for a mower tractor. I know I've got at least $2500 into it not counting labor. 3000 sounds reasonable to me.

I agree with Hugh. an H is too big for cutting grass. You could spend a $1000 on a pull behind 10hp trail mower and pull it behind your C. I would tell your friend that the H is too big and you appreciate his offer bla, bla, bla. That way money doesnt come between friends.

The H is too big you realy need a B with 6ft WOODS belley mower. Have one customer with one works great on damn of pond and all around mows probably 7-8a total said he should have had one years ago. Six foot mowers are around 2200 and up and you should have turf tires for best results unless you arent picky about the grass.

A DAM is only a DAMN if the brakes fail and the tractor suddenly becomes submerged. LOL

Paul: One word of caution, that H will be much heavier than your Super C. Not a real concern except for when ground is wet. I have a Woods on my Super A and find that at times when ground is water saturated, it will leave tire marks I don't like.

I like the Woods belly mower very much, and think the mowing quality is second to none. I'm not entirely satisfied Super A is the right vehicle for my power source. I have a lot of ornamental trees, flowers, etc. to mow around, and think a utility type tractor with under slung exhaust may be better. Between breaking tree limbs with mufler, and loosing my hat to the same, I'm not sure which is greater risk; breaking parts of exhaust system or sun on my hairless head.

I bought my mower used for $650. CAD, spent another $350. on mounting as mower had come from a BN. I paid out another $70. for new blades. I will at some point need to replace belt as a section of it was saturated with oil. It is deteriorating on that area. I now have a good solid mower for about $1,070. CAD plus a belt. A new Woods here, dumped of in my yard, not mounted would have been about $3,200. CAD. I will admit, I looked at a lot of used Woods mowers, price none less than the one I bought. Many of them were worn completely out, some damaged, etc. If I add that time and travel to price I paid, new would probably been less money.

I also see some merrit to rear hitch model; you can back it under low hanging trees and shrubs, you can remove or mount to tractor quickly. I find the belly mower almost eliminates doing other chores with tractor. If I didn't have other tractors, I would not be happy with this setup.

These have been my experiences, I realize everyone's situation is different. You will have to evaluate this for yourself.

As you say, this tractor was a FFA project which more than likly means it was gone throught pretty well, it should last someone a number of years if properly maintained. If you were to buy an H an restore it ( I mean restore !!! not a paint job an a change of plugs, oil, filter an points along with a fan belt ) then you are going to have at least 2k in parts add labor an new tires you are over 3k without the mower. The last thing is that if your happy with the price an the person is happy selling it to you, then it's the right price. Take a look at my web page an you can see some of what goes into restoring an H, good luck :o)

Hi Paul

Here in PA , 1000 for just a tractor with tires and runs ok. Now paint I'm thinking of painting one soon, 150-300. How is the manifold, was head redone, tires Good extra for 6 ply. Mower for 6 acres, you can brush hog it. Mower 250-500. If it is a good sound tractor I would think it is right around average price, if you shop around and go with a brush hog you would have 1000- 1200 anyway.

Have Fun !!

Teddy

Paul;
I wouldn't hesitate on the tractor if it would serve your purpose. To me, any tractor with some ownership history is worth a premium over finding one on a dealer's lot, with nothing more than a quick paint job and a new battery.
Better hurry, before someone else snoops it out.
Good Luck

Rau,

Boy, that's the way I go at things too. If ya find one that makes the hair stand up on your arms, grab the thing. If you don't, somebody else will.

Paul,

Pricing is a judgement call; depends both on the buyer and the seller. I've got close to $4K in my old H and I'm as happy as a pig in a mud puddle.

I think that H is probably worth about $2K (see what you can buy from a dealer for that amount!). Add in the mower with the mounting and it is getting pretty close to what he is asking, in my view.

On the other hand, we can buy used, tired old Hs out here in the hills for $500 any day of the week.

Sorry Pard, this one is really up to you, your wife and your friend. :>(

Don't know where you live, but you might find a used Woods for your C at www.jptractorsalvage.com (southern Mo.) or www.chowntractorsalvage.com (Canada).

I did find a few used woods mowers but boy, when I say used I mean completly worn out and they still wanted $900 for them and that was without the belts or the brakets I would need to make it fit my C. John, where you at the show in Republic MO? I saw some sharp cubs and wondered if any of those where yours.

Like the others said buy it. Becasue when you get tired of finish mowing SIX acres you can use the H to pull a disk before you drill in oats and alfalfa to raise the hay for which you'll need a sickel mower, rake, baler, hay wagon and a new barn which should be built oversized to store the rest of the equipment you'll need to farm with. And that's the truth. Dick Davis
