The woods were full of Ms with mounted 4 row planters in the South. The ones I saw had fertilizer attachment in front and planter in back. There was a walk board across back and someone rode the board to watch the planter and to pull the row markers. That way driver could concentrate on keeping rows straight and even. If I ever looked back there was allways a kink in row.

Hey NDS, my father-in-law used to tell me you could always get more corn in a crooked row than in a straight one. Later, Harley

Is the planter mounted on the front or the rear?

Mornin' Rusty,

I've never seen one in person, but I recall seeing pictures of the things mounted like the front half of a wide corn cultivator.

The ones I'm thinkin' of had a single hopper on each side of the tractor and were kind of a neat lookin' setup. I can't remember how they got the ground drive tho. Probably came off the packer wheel like those old 56s.

Allan, that's kinda why I was asking, I've seen the two row version, in fact I had the chance to buy one when I bought my 1940 H, the same unit that had been used with the tractor. Didn't think I needed or wanted it, been kicking myself ever since. If I remember right, the planter unit brought nearly as much as I paid for the tractor. Getting back to the original topic, I don't know if there was a four row version.

Strayin' from the subject,

But, I remember one time being in town and overhearing two dry land farmers a visitin' in a store.

One was wondering how those irrigators could get those darned rows so straight the way they do.

The other made the statement, "They've got to be using a surveying instrument".

I thought that was funny, 'cause we all grew up learning how to drive 'em by the seat of our pants. If you wanted to bring down the wrath of ol' Pap, just plant a crooked row. :>)

Yep, just eyeball a tree, fence post, or the neighbors wife and head straight for it, just like sighting in a rifle. Just hope the neighbors wife doesn't move too much.

You can get more plants per acres with crooked rows than with straight rows. It's done intentionally.

Hey Steve,

Remember how you couldn't just let the planter down and go?

Had to drop it on the run as sometimes the soil conditions were just right and the dirt would plug up the shoe if you were sittin' still & dropped 'er. You'd look back later and see the seed just a boilin' out over the top of that feed tube.

I remember that chewin' out as well. :>(

Well now, I was opening a field and sighted in on a small tree at the far end of the field. 1/2 mile rows. Turned out to be neighbors cow and she wasnt standing still.

Thems the rows Dad was complaining about. I dont know how the oldtimers(were getting there Allan)could keep rows even and straight without markers. But they werent going 7-8mph either. 3.5 would be more like it.
