Farmall A miss/sputter

YTers,

My A has a kind of strange miss to it - all rpm, better but still present under load. It isn't really a miss, more like a "puff" through the exhaust. For instance, at idle the rain cap on the exhaust constantly flutters up and down. I never really noticed how bad it was until I got the Super C rebuild done a few days ago...it really runs and idles smooth. The A has had recent tune-ups, card and governor adjustments, the usual stuff. Could it be a sticky valve?
Thanks for the opinions,
Bill

It could be a valve that is set too tight or a valve that is starting to burn (yeah I know :>[ ). When you pull the valve cover to check for a sticking valve, check to see if the valves are set correctly too.

Had the exact thing when I first bought my basket case 1945 A.It was a valve not closing till it got compression. The cheapie fix was took the cover off and doused the offending valve with pb-blaster.Then I tapped the valve lightly on top with a brass hammer, and I re-wet and tapped some more till it freed up.the valve spring would pop it back shut after a few taps.I put it back together and it has been fine since.results may vary :-)

Thanks for the replies.

This tractor set for a few months while it was being painted. When I started it, one of the valves was stuck as in running-on-three stuck. I did the lubricate and work it up and down routine and it popped up.

I'll re-check the valve adjustment but set them a little loose deliberately last time. Looks like the valve cover has to come off anyway...

Thanks,
Bill
