Hey everyone. I would just like to say once again thank you for all of the help and amazing advice you have given me. I am kicking cans here. I have arrived at a few questions.
1.) What pistons came factory in the Super M? 4" flat tops or Firecraters?
2.) Did Firecraters ever come in a 4" package?
3.) What is the basis for installing new sleeves rather than total overhaul? 4.) My Super M has firecraters and worn out sleeves. Does that mean the pistons are worn out too? 5.) Are used pistons and new sleeves a good match?
Any info you guys can give me will be GREATLY appreciated. I'm collecting as much advice as I can before I make my decision. THANK YOU!!!

1.Super M came with 4 inch pistons, the compression was optional. You could order different altitude pistons when you order your tractor,up to 10,000 ft altitude.
2. yes they were offered in 4inch
3.If your sleeves are worn and pistons are not, sure just change the sleeves.
4.You would have to measure the pistons for wear.Years ago the practice was to knurl the piston skirt and use oversize rings.
5.All goes back to how worn the pistons are. A couple of years ago I was doing the same thing with my 53 superM. I had low compression on one cylinder, turned out to be the rings on that piston were broke and broke the lands out. Also had a badly craked head that leaked like a screen door on a submarine!
I did a full rebuild.

Hi tim Let me tell you what I am doing. I have an H that was rebuilt back in the 70s with M&W parts. I honed the crap out of her about 7 years ago and installed a new set of sealed power rings. I have worked her hard . Now I picked up a new set of M&W sleeves on ebay and plan on installing them with new rings again along with everything else this time.As far as I know pistons wouldnt wear much if there wasnt a problem becuase the rings touch not the piston unless you are worn out and get lots of slap and stough.I guess there is also wrist pins to check. I will check on that other and get back to you. JON

Super M would have come with 4" flat tops, if you change sleeves and pistons in Super M block you can go to 4 1/8 inch bore. Not sure what you mean, new sleeves vs total overhaul. Total overhaul to me would be sleeve and piston kit, new rod, man and cm bearings, new gaskets everywhere, valve job also. I don"t think I would go with used pistons and new sleeves. If sleeves are worn out and they are steel would thing that pistons would wear more being aluminum.

I have the opportunity to buy new sleeves instead of a complete overhaul kit. That's where the derivitive of my questions comes from. I need to be cheap as heck, but I am not going to sacrifice doing it RIGHT too. Thanks for your advice.

Before you buy the sleeves, mic the liners you have. You may have worn out pistons and good sleeves. It is hard to tell until you measure.

I have had good luck only replacing rings (when all else is OK but not perfect) and working it hard for many years.

But if you buy new sleeves, I'd be hard pressed to put old pistons in them unless they mic'd OK. I know it is done but I've never been a big fan of knurling.

The sleeves are obviously worn out, though. There is a ridge on the top of the sleeve deep enough to catch my fingernail on. They are easily the worst sleeves I have ever seen. I don't want to replace sleeves and do away with my firecraters, though. AHHHH. I will have them spec'd by my IH dealer, and get their input. Their head mechanic is a family friend of mine who restores tractors as a hobby, too, and has helped me out numerous times. Thanks for the post, and I will keep everyone updated.

Hi Tim,

I saw on redpower you are looking for a IH 20-C forage harvester. I have one but could not get logged on to respond to you there. Please email me.

Thanks,

Ted
