While leafing through the local farm paper, I ran across an ad for: "McCormick-Deering W-9 with Buick V8 & automatic transmission & Westendorf loader." I guess I can visualize a Buick engine...but how the heck would you adapt an automatic transmission to a W-9?
Just curious.

Rauville: That W9 would have quite large torque tube so very likely the automatic transmission would fit inside and would just need a coupling device to input shaft of W9 5 speed transmission.

I wouldn't get too awfully hung up on fact Buick engine could turn 5,000 rpm. Most Buicks only turned about 1750 rpm at 60 mph. He may well have a governor on the engine. It's very obvious this guy geared this up to give him a shuttle transmission as a loader tractor. It could be one of the better IH loader tractors on the market. IH gear drives were never noted as great loader tractors, they were designed for drawbar work.

Of course that is what destroyed the Farmall, as the very best drawbar tractor we ever knew. All these up and coming young farmers wanting to put a loader on everything that moved.

Easy. Connect the output shaft of the automatic tranny to the input shaft on the main tranny. The automatic will gear down the high RPM of the engine to something the main tranny can handle.

as long as the automatic was ahead of the original gear trans, I bet it would work slick

Assuming the Tranny is a 3spd select shift, and the W-9 is a 4 speed.

You could concievably have like....12 different gears, plus reverse.

all that without a clutch.

Only problem I could see would be that the V8 is capable of 5-6 thousand revs a minutes, and the stock W-9 gearing isnt design to work under those conditions. plus, big US V-8 = alot of crank torque.

Id check it out and get back to us, and get pics.

Buy it, put some open headers on it, drop in a lopey cam, and tune it up, awesome parade tractor!
