Faking out the sender field in an email address turns out to be ridiculously easy...leading to this kind of problem. The internet standard for email message headers does not provide for any way of guaranteeing a sender's address, and in fact, it's an in-the-clear text portion of the header and lots of spammers have hooked onto that to fake out anti-spam programs that automatically discard messages that come from blacklisted senders.

We implement all sorts of sophisticated anti-spam and anti-virus solutions at my office, and we still get all sorts of garbage coming through. The only sure way of guaranteeing that an email is coming from a particular person is to use digital certificates. Most email systems now support certificates for identification, but it's still a pain to set them up.

Over and out,

- David

Oh and BTW in reply to old don, 11-09-2004 16:32:28

None of my e-mail addresses have the name I Bleed Green on them. If this e-mail you got had the name I Bleed Green on it. It's not from me.

yup, same here Allan is right. I get emails everyday from this and that "farmall" Anything suspicious I do not open. I also get spam emails cleverly using part of my own name. They will do anything to get your attention and hope you will open it. The big push right now seems to be Rollex watches, better than some of the stuff I get ☺

Don,

Just because you got an email which stated it was from IBG, doesn't necessarily mean it came from him. These things rewrite the sender; it could have come from anyone who has his email address.

Just so you know; lots of arguements start over these darned things.

Allan

Allen's right. The scammers and bootleggers pick up peoples e-mail addresses and then send out viruses under cover. I know for a fact they've got mine. I get countless e-mails returned to me as undeliverable to so and so as though I had sent them. I get e-mails from guys who are pissed I sent them a virus and I never sent them anything. I gewt several virus alerts attached to flagged messages each day. I use the classified ads on lots of sites to sell stuff so my e-mail is out there and the jerks have it. Same has probably happened to IBG. Scammers are lurking on the YTmag classified and photo ads all the time.

lee, hate to break it to you, but you DO have a virus buddy! I don"t remember the name, but it will send emails from your computer to everyone in your address book. The reason you are getting "undeliverable" messages, is because you have old addresses in your address book. It is sending your files as email to people, without your knowledge. Trust me, it"s a real virus, the extension is .exe but I can"t remember the actual name, could be W32, not sure. Get your PC checked out, that is a very REAL VIRUS. Just trying to help..... .Stan

I don't think a virus is on my computer sending e-mails. I have up to date Norton virus scan and I use adware removers and my internet provider uses virus detectors as well. These undelivered
e-mails from me to joe blow don't originate on my computer. They are not going to any address that was ever in my address book. Of course I am no virus expert so there is always a possibility I could have a virus but this particular funny business is originating elsewhere and coming back to me as undelivered.

Stan: You are right, I was having same problem as lee. I knew my Norton was out of date. Took the computer in for service. They checked it out found the virus, cleaned it up and up dated my Norton. That ended the problem of returned mail I never sent.

I believe it is more along the lines of the Dave in UT post above. Don't think for a minute the
bootleggers can't grab your e-mail address and use it as though they were you. It's a bit of identity theft.
