We bought a 966 tractor and every thing I read shows that it should have 414 on the block, but this one has 437, if this is out of something else does anyone know what it is? thanks..

The 414, 436, and the 466 are the 400 series engines. They are pretty much identical, other than the crankshaft/stroke. 966's had the 414 from the factory, but installing a 436 or 466 is pretty much a bolt-in deal. If you've got 437 stamped on the block, it means you have a "B" series 436, which came along in '79. There is a rumor going around that the last few 966's had 436 engines from the factory, just like a 986, but that would have been in '76, they would not have been "B" series engines yet.

The 966 had a 414 engine stock, the 986 had the 436. Is the engine you have stamped 437, or how do you know it is a 437?

Just for your info, I converted the 414 in my 966 to a 436 by changing the crank and ordering in the 436 sleeve set. I also added a turbo off a 1066 and was very pleased with what I got for torque even without changing the settings on the fuel pump!

Dave,

I don't know exactly where the breakpoint was, but the later 9s have bigger engines.

I think all the 986s have the larger size too, although I don't recognize that "437". Thought that they were a 441 or some such thing. Dunno.

Is yours a black stripe, by chance?

Allan

Thanks to all who responded. The seriel number on the tractor makes it a 1974 but the engine block is stamped "437" and the breather is on the top and comes down over the left side.
