I got my 4x14 model 540 plow yesterday and took it out to the pasture to test it out. I was plowing just a little more than a hand deep in second gear with my 560 diesel when it started to pull hard so I pulled the TA back and the tractor stopped. I quickly pushed the clutch in let the TA out and shifted to first gear and continued to plow with no problem. Is my TA about shot or is there an adjustment to it? There was no unusual noise.

Yup, Don't mean to be a pessimist, but the TA went south and it won't be back next spring either. As Allen said the overrunning ramp and roller clutch or “sprag” on the planetary isn’t hooking up. Usually this is due to stuck or flat rollers or broken springs. Your next decision is to fix or just take the handle off and run without. Personally, I’d fix, but then I have torn them down before…

Its probably gone or so close to it that you might as well say it is. You maybe able to adjust it but I wouldn't hold my breath

Sounds like the sprag is slipping to me too since it drops out when the stick comes back.

Hey fellas! I have a question, so don't laugh at me. What is the reason for such an expensive overhaul of the TA and is it a technical nightmare or is it because you have to split the tractor? Which I understand is not an easy task. I do know when we bought a used SMTAD the TA went out within the 30day period and the dealer had to replace it in 1961 and they said it would have cost $1200 if we paid for it. We paid $2250 for that tractor then and boy was it a looker? Boy! we should have kept that bad boy!Just curious.

I got a quote from Red Power dealer with a guess of 30 hours of work to replace clutch and TA. Parts were an additional $800 for both TA and HD clutch. A heavy duty TA would be about $250 more. To replace both you have two splits of the tractor. I'm going to have it done once and for all.
