12 V Alternator on M - Help!!!

I mounted a 12-volt Hitachi alternator on my M according to Big John's instructions of Feb 13, 2004 and wired it in following Robert Melville's wiring diagram #3. However, when I tried to attach the ground cable to the batery, I got a big spark! When I disconnected the wire to the BAT terminal on the alternator, the spark went away.
Is there something I need to do to the Alternator to "Polarize" it?
Could the NAPA rebuilt alternator have a short?
This is my first tractor with an electrical system (the others were hand-crankers with mags) and I need help!!!

I agree with the others. Sounds like you had your 12 volt battery initially connected with the positive post grounded. If so then that first spark you got fried the diodes and regulator in the alternator.

Before you mess with it anymore take the alternator off and bring it to NAPA, etc. Then have 'em put it on their test stand to see if it's still good.

I suspect your battery was connected backwards. If so, you'll need to take the alternator in and get the diodes replaced.

Dean,

Did you remember to reverse the polarity of the battery?

No, you don't polarize an alternator.
