W-30 parts help

As you can guess from my name, I'm more of a green guy. But I need help with my grandpa's W-30 (#12355). Purchased it about a month ago, ran good, drove it around, but not too much.

After sitting for a while the water level got low, and when started blew water out the exhaust (Uh oh). Filled it back up and added antifreeze (probably the first time it's seen antifreeze!)

Ran it around, and had to pull start another tractor (green!). Then the W-30 began foaming out the radiator cap!

We're hoping it's a head gasket, but don't really know. Did these engines have any tendancy to crack the head or block, or sleeve problems?

Was there a factory service manual or parts book? Or is I+T the only option?

What's a good place for parts for the F-30/W-30 engine, including gaskets?

Thanks for any help?

Nice to hear you got your GrandPa's tractor. But my only question is who went wrong down the line from the W-30 and went green? Seriously though it sounds like a head gasket, but I strongly urge you to examine the lower end of the engine. Generally when a head gasket leaks, water will seep past the rings and infiltrate the oil in the crank. The next time you run it your oil will turn very nasty and stop lubricating all those critical bearings. It was even worse when you put anti-freeze in it without checking the head gasket. That stuff is murder on bearings! I bet that you oil is very contaminated and will lead to serious engine problems if you don't change it and the oil filter. These tractors are not really known for cracking heads, but the blocks can be easily cracked just above the crankcase by leaving just a small amount of water in the block. The sleeves last forever. As for books, the I&T manual is just a copy of original IH manuals. so it is pretty good in my opinion. There are parts books available, either original or reprint. Ebay is a good source for original manuals, both owners and parts. There are many places to get parts, most notably Rice Equipment in Clarion, PA, or Tom Underwood in Lawrence, KS. But there are many others out there. Do a Google serach and you should have no problem finding gaskets.

Thanks everybody so far!

My family has had a variety of old junk. One side of the family used mainly Case, the other JD! The first project was a Case VAC that had been in the family since new. But when running an old JD D for the first time, I was hooked to green (and industrial yellow, i.e. "WeirdDeere") BUT, I like all the old tractors. The W30 is a neat one!

I believe that the antifreeze didn't get a chance to hurt the bearings. It wasn't running more than a half hour, and didn't sit very long before the antifreeze was drained to keep it out of the engine. I will certainly check/change the oil before running it again (in spring!).

Thanks for the help. I sure hope it is just a head gasket! I'm glad to hear the I+T is a reprint of the IH manual.

I have NOS F30/W30 head gaskets for $45/ea plus shipping. I also may have a couple of NOS valves, and other parts that you may need.
