I'm doing maintenance on my old cub - I noticed
that the belts (generator and fan) are old, cracked and loose. Any trick to getting new ones on without removing the radiator?

Thanks! Success... in reply to Scott Stephenson, 11-06-2004 13:09:14
Thanks for all your very prompt responses!
I was able to remove BOTH old belts by lowering the fan spindle and wrestling them over the fan blades - it helped to completely remove the generator as it gave me much more room to maneuver.

If you do not mind the look or the expense, get a low vibration belt that is composed of small interlocking pieces - I cannot remember the exact name of this belt type. I find using these much faster than disassembling rusted bolts.

My generator belt is to short to go over the fan blades. I have to remove the fan to change it. To do that I swing the generator all the way to the side, remove the airl filter assembly and unbolt the shroud. Then I remove the fan and shroud up and to the side.

Your Cub must have a modified charging system with a shorter than normal belt, as I think you should be able to get the belt off without removing the fan assembly. You have to work the belt over one blade at a time.

There were 2 different length belts used on Cub generators, probably a third for the alternator equipped ones. Don't know if the difference is make or break on getting them over the fan blades.

The others don't say, but be sure when you loosen the fan spindle, you use a wrench on the hex on the front side of the bracket. That's the hex between the bracket and the fan. The nut is on the back side and is in a slot to keep it from turning when you put a wrench on the hex on the front side. I've seen folks try to get a wrench on the nut on the back side and you won't have any luck with that and just make a mess.

If I remember correctly, use a thin 13/16" open-end wrench.

Loosen the spindle nut on the fan / hub assembly and lower it all the way down in the slots in the front engine cover. Slip the belt off of the crank pulley and work it out over the fan blades. Once the fan belt is off, the generator belt will be accessable. It will be tight quarters but it can be done.

I wish I had an easy way to do this, but I don't. I usually just work the belts over the fan. It's a job that requires patience. If you try to do it fast, You'll end up with busted knuckles. Good luck.
