Not trying to start a color war here, but what is the deal with the 2020? My brother has had one for about 15 years or so, and thinks the thing is made of gold. Course it costs him like gold when he needs parts. His is the gasser, orchard version, I THINK about a 1968 or so, by the way. I have never been impressed with the thing, other that it is low to the ground. Heck - I like my 8N better, even with the HP difference, no live PTO, etc. Everyone has thier own preferences - just trying to figure out what he sees in the thing.

I don't think so. Looks like ya add 10, move 10 left 2 places and then add 10 again, like this: 1010, (add 10) 1020, move 10 left 2places, 2010, add 10, 2020 and so on.

A 1010 is smaller and older then a 2020. The 1020 replaced the 1010 and is a much better tractor then a 1010 or 2010. The 2020 replaced the 2010.

The Ford 8N I knew was geared too tall and had no power.

I agree with the gearing -- a lot of wheel slippage under load.

Drove two utilities off and on for years -- only problem was the electric solenoid on the carb. I have heard its predecessor the 2010 wasn't that good, but never any problems with the 2020. Comparing the 2020 to the 8N is like comparing an orange to a rotten apple (the 8N). I have never seen the orchard verison, or the row crop version for that matter.

I'm not really comparing the 8N to the 2020 - I just like it better! It's more fun (for me anyway) to operate and easier for me to use. I also have the 460 and M to work with, but I was wondering what he saw in the 2020. He said the going price for one is about $12,000 - I just can't see it! I think the Orchard version is different due to the exhaust is underneath and the hood is "clean" - the intake air filter being on the side instead of on top. Don't really know much about the "green" side of things!

Since I have used both extensively, I think if you actually had to farm with them, there would be no comparison between an 8N and a 2020. They belong to different generations, thus the 2020 is vastly superior in all ways. Production of the 8N ceased in 1952, the 2020 wasn't produced until 1962 or later?, IBG can correct me as I don't know when 2010 production ended. If all you want to do is run it up and down the road, take your pick. Tractors really weren't made to have fun on, but to do work with.

If you can't have fun while you're working, then why bother. I run a 2-14 plow, 8' disc, 6' hogmower, sickle bar, rake, loader, 6' blade, 300 gallon sprayer, harrow, buzz saw, and a lot more with the 8n. Sure - you can do that all with other tractors, but that isn't what I was asking. I just wanted to know what was so great about a 2020, not it's differences from an 8N.

The 2020 is a more modern tractor, I don't know how to explain what's so "great" about it unless I point out the differences. I have driven both. I much prefer the 2020, you obviously have other ideas, which are ok with me -- again I have never seen an orchard model, much less driven one. My farm experience with the 8N was not very pleasant, compared with the Farmall H and B I drove in the 50's, and the JD tractors I drove later. You are entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine.

Over the years I've had about 6 or 7 8N tractors but I woudn't want to go back to using them every day again. The 2020 and the 2030 orchard were in a lot of cases low profile 9x10 front 18.1x16 back, but they had a solid cast front grill. There were some with standard 14.9x24 tires but the value is in the very limited production numbers. I have a JD 300 industrial with the same frnt grill.

The orchard model would be rare. 2020U's are usually advertized for 4-6000. More if it has a loader.

After rereading your post, I really did not mean to insult your 8N. Those tractors do have their place. Drove one for several summers as a kid, mostly cultivation, the 8N is not a good cultivating tractor. I used the 2020 for light tillage operations (12 ft springtooth, etc), and planting. Handles a mounted 4-row planter with ease, with weights on the front. Hydraulics are good. Has a 4 speed hi-low transmission, meaning 8 forward and 4 reverse--it should have been set up with fewer reverse gears. The 2 lever shift mechanism is a little clutzy, and is not syncromesh, but there is a speed for about any operation. Power is adequate for its intended purpose. Very easy to handle. Live hyd, pto and good brakes. I have also driven an IH 444, the 2020 was probably a better tractor, but not really a fair comparison because the 2020 is bigger. I grew up with Farmalls, own 6 Farmalls and 1 International, no JD's, nor do I want one. But, JD's new generation tractors, and IH's management problems (too slow to bring out new models) is what ultimately killed IH.
