Stumbled across a IH 504 gas this afternoon for sale.

I don't know much about these tractors, but she sure looked pretty solid.

Has PS, 3pt hitch, loader. Not sure but didn't look like it had a TA. Maybe it did. Needs paint and rubber, appears to have had engine rebuild as everything under the hood is dull yellow.

The fella is asking $3500 or best offer....

1) good price?
2) What to look for on this model?

THanks a bunch....

Brian: The 504 gas tractor was one of the first IH tractors not to have a sleeved engine. Problem is, after 2 or 3 engine rebuilds, your looking for a new engine, rather than a piston and sleeve kit as was the case with the older ones.

I had a 504, came with a farm I bought. Vendor had just rebuilt the engine at about 1,200 hours. He advised me not to keep it long. I had planned on trading my 300 on a new 1066. After a day in the field using both 300 and 504 on a 3x16 trailer plow, the 504 got traded and 300 stayed. Remember also 504 was supposed to be 8-10 more hp than 300. No so on that day, my old 300 out lugged the 504 on the 3 bottom plow by a wide margin. My 300 by 1975, was on it's 4th set of pistons and sleeves and probably had about 16 to 18 M hours on it.

Scruffy: I'm not exactly sure what engine was in the 93 combine. Two possibilities C-135 or C153. Good chance the C-135 was used in the 91 combine. The age of the 93 would make it right for the C-153. It is probably on the block in cast letter and numbers
