Dummy Needs Advice Again

Hi Red Guys,

Need some advice again.

I'm in the process of building a set of truss rods to strengthen the underbelly of my H for loader use.

As a first step in the process, I opened the cover to the belly pump, pulled the pump drive down outta there and cinched down the torque tube attaching bolts good and tight.

Now while I was inside the cavity, I noticed a small fluid leak at the drive shaft coming from the rear end that originally drives the belly pump in these things.

Question is: Can those seals be changed from the pump drive cavity side, or do I have to lift the lid on 'er to get at that seal?

Thanks,

Allan

If it is like the M there may have originally been a wider seal than you will be getting as a replacement. Sometimes when I run across this situation I have installed two seals hoping that one of them will be riding on a new sealing surface the pump drive. Check for a groove worn in it, there are "speedy sleeves" available that will restore surfaces for oil seals to run on which is another option. My nickel's worth.

Allan,

No need to take the cover off the tranny. To get to the seal, remove the slotted drive by unscrewing it using a bar that will fit in the slot or, do it the way I did, take a pipe wrench to it. Make sure the tractor is in gear and braks locked to accomplish this. Once that drive is out of the way, remove the three bolts holding the seal holder in place. Drive the old seal out, put the new one in and replace the holder, making sure that the word "TOP" is at the top. Screw the slotted dog back un and you"re good to go. HTH. Larry

Depending on your tool box,you may have to drop the pump, but other than that,no biggie.I changed one this morning without dropping the pump.

Hi John,

No, I'm talking about the seal on the rear end side, not the pump. Sorry for bein' unclear.

Allan

I know which one your talking about. What I meany was if youre like me,you have a good little set of tools, and can use any combination of them to get the bolts out,but my neighbor dsoent have anything but wrenchs,no sockets and if maybe would have to pull the pump to use just those.
