You failed to mention if it was diesel or gas which could make difference on rebuild cost and if diesel I'm told was 12 volt system and gas was 6 volt which after growing up with these tractors I never knew the gas one was 6 volt. We had a diesel our neighbor had a gas one. A few things to remember is as someone mentioned is that the TA is probably not working. This is very easy to check once you get the engine freed up and running just pull the left stick back while in gear and if it slows to a stop or creep just push on the brake and if it just sets there the TA is toast. This tractor was factory stocked with live hydraulics and live PTO which also makes it a premo tractor. The only other thing I can add is if you're going to show this tractor then horsepower is not an issue but if you're going to work it the horsepower rating is decieving because when they added all the live everything made it kind of doggy, on most any day a hot M or SM could walk all over it. That was the biggest complaint we always had but it sure was nice to run especially pulling the forage harvester when filling silo. Good Luck.

500 sounds pretty good but be aware, if TA is out it could cost $1500 to 2K to have it fixed, Or, do it yourself in about 20 hours and probably $200 or so in parts. Or, I know of someone who has one for sale that looks & runs like new with a wide front. Told me he might take 12 or 13 thousand for it.

What is up with a 12 or 13 thousand dollar SMTA? Are you saying he'd never sell it unless he got that much? Or he is advertizing it at that price? I know I probably won't take anything less than 7 for my tractor, like was previously said, it's in the heart, so I could see a 12 or 13. I just wanted to clarify your statement. Take care, and have a nice week.

Cheap at $500.00..... Buy It.
They are 54 years old..... .Only made in 1954.
48.56 h.p. @ the belt.
The goodies are the TA and IPTO if so equipped.
Easy to get parts for.
Fair Shape .....Depends.....$2000.00 - $4500.00 ?
They built them in Louville, Kentuck. None came with 2 pt. fast hitch.

Sorry, my mistake on the fasthitch- some people must have added them on after the 400s came out.

I just bought a SMTA that was stuck for $500 too. Pretty fair price, considering engine rebuilds are not cheap. A reasonable good running SMTA brings $2500 to $3000. Hard to say what a restored one brings- sell it on Ebay...

Hp is about 45-55?

Live pto, disk brakes, live hydraulics. Some came with a 2pt fast hitch that can be converted to 3pt. Wide front and powersteering are a plus.

Nice tractor to restore. They are becoming somewhat collectible, so if you fix it and sell it, you may not loose money on the deal.

they were only built in 1954. i don't know how many but not a whole lot. t/a's are usually out. shouldn't be to bad to overhaul. if the sheet metal is straight and in overall ok shape i would say $500 isn't out of line. they are never worth what you put into them to restore. it's all in the heart.
