Stu - Do you know what inside the regulator is failing (contact points, relay winding burning out, etc)? That will provide a clue to what is causing the failures.

A few possibilities: Are the tractor electrics connected positive ground? (Regulator may have shortened life if the system is neg ground). Does the tractor have a stock generator, AND are you using the correct regulator number? (Gen and reg must be matched to each other) If the generator has an adjustable 3rd brush is the 3rd brush set correctly?

Bob gen and reg are matched and positive ground it does not have 3rd brush. I think it's the contact points if I tap on reg it works. Out of 5 tractors this one is driveing me nuts!

Stu – You sure you’ve got the stock generator? Far as I’m aware all SC’s use a Delco 3rd brush 6 volt gen – the later ones with a non-adjustable 3rd brush. I’m thinking if your gen is a 2 brush it could be overloading and burning the regulator contacts.
