Just curious guys, what are the opinions on the 361/407 vs the 414/436/466? Any opinion on which series was best and which specific engine(s) was best?

The 414/436/466 was one of IH's best engines and still used in Navistar trucks. I think they were the one think IH did right. The reason why so many were rebuilt a 5,000 hours is a problem that developed with all wet sleeve engines - cavatation at the bottom of the selves that drilled tiny holes through the sleeve allowing water to mix with the oil. This problem was solved with a coolant additive and water filter. If this was known earlier you would see more 10,000 hour engines out there with out a rebuild. IH's big problem and downfall was their transmissions and especially their shifters and linkage. If IH came out with a shift on the go transmission earlier IH might be in John Deer’s place today instead of a re-branded FIAT.

Personally I prefer the 361/407s, I am not aware of any crank problems with the 407. I do know though, that they last so long, often the harmonic balancer goes out and breaks the crank. You can look all day at 12s and 806s, and 14s, though they are harder to come across that have never been touch and houred to the hilt when it comes to the engine.

I do believe you can get more power out of the 466s, as evidenced by the type of engines most guys pull. That said, when I open up the des moines register there are a lot of 66 series tractors that have been overhauled with around 5-7000 hours on them, more so, it seems, than the 06 56 series counterparts. I guess I judge an engine by the hours you can put on it, and the money you got to put in to it to do it. Other guys focus more on power, and based on the size of their operation, that probably is where their focus should be at. Personally, I think our 806 and 1256 get much better fuel economy when doing light work like haying than our 1066. Pulling seems to be about the same.

I meant to say that a 1456 is kind of hard to come across, not that it was hard to find one with a long running engine.

407 engines had a problem with crankshaft failures such as cranks breaking. 361 would run forever. lot of 361"s out there with 15000 hours or more on them. the 407 crankshafts can be found for a small fortune of $2500 dollars

Mike if the 400 series which is the 414 436 466 would have had a little stronger head I think they would have been the best. The 361 and 407 were very good. Where the differenc comes as I see it the 361 & 407 got about 15 horeses to a gallon of fuel where the 400 can has high as 21 horses to a gallon of fuel. My 2 cents.
