Ok,, Here is what I am up to,,, I am looking for the difference here. To my knowledge the 460 had a shorter stroke than the 263, but had the same bore size. 3-9/16. Other than the stroke difference,, where did they make up the difference to compesnaste the compression height of the piston? did the use a longer rod, or a taller piston to make up the difference? The reason I ask is,, somewhere in all that,, there is a difference in either the rod length, or the compression height of the piston, If either is so,,, it would be a huge gain on hp using 100% IH parts in it. I dont have a (224 460 engine) to tear apart to see for myself,, just wondering if someone knew what the difference was. Thanks,, ChadS

There was a set of new pistons that didnt meet the reserve price on ebay. They were for a 220ci truck engine they have a nice size dome on them. Look up ebay Item number 7930133745

Chad maybe I don't remember right but thought the rings were at the top of the piston so you machine the ring groove way but if the ring are not at the top of the piston you might machine them

Hey Chad. Thanks for the reply to my questionson building up the H. I have converted several 460 gas engines and 1 diesel engine to 560 parts. The basic difference is in the crankshaft. My 460 Diesel turbotractor was a 236 and now is a 282 bored out a little with a 3 in turbo intake running @ 3200 rpm.Bigger pump and a few other things. It is a fun ride in 4th gear. I have a 221 gas engine sitting here in Wa. if somebody is needing one. I also pull 2 560 gas tractors @ 7000 and 8000 lbs. Migraine

I am in the process of building a lite weight 460 for antique pullin, it weighs in at 3200, and still has alot to lose in weight,, yep, I said 3200lbs. I left a better post a few mins ago that gives more info onthe H-350 engines. Hope it helps,,, Got any pictures of your pullers? I have a few of my H puller. ChadS

Chad The main difference between 460 and the 560 engine was the crankshaft and the pistons the 460 had a longer piston between the rist pin and the top of the piston between the pin and the oil ring. Putting the 560 crank and pistons in the 460 makes a real tractor out of them even run better in cold weather. Any straight 460 I ever had on the dyno had a hard time putting out 50hp with the 560 stuf 65hp not hard.

I was looking through a Clevite piston spec book a few mins ago,, Here is what I found.
C-263 Sleeveless combine/cotton picker engine
Compression height of 2.024, now that engine, has the same crank as the 560-806. 4.31 stroke??
That is the engine I have for my 460H puller. Out of a 403 combine,, books say is it a wierd engine for some reason,, listed all by its self in the book. the C-221 (460) had a 2.328 compression height, with the same rods as all the 6's, but the short stroke crank. So the difference in the 2 pistons are .304, the 460 piston is .304 taller than the C-263. I have a mill, so I was thinking of reamachining the 460 pistons, to match the 2.024 compression height of the 263. What this will do is make the domes of the pistons taller and fill up more of the compression chamber, after I re machine them to fit the head. Right now, my C-263 has 155 psi of compression, and I am shooting for 200+ psi of compression by doing this with the pistons. they will be fire crater pistons, but with a .304 taller dome than the 263 piston. Since IH made so many different parts for all of their engines, and learned over the years that if one looked at all the info on paper, and tried to make performance parts, from what is already there, and could be used, and fabricated at pennies of the cost to have pistons forged, or the cranks to be stroked. I know this is more for the pulling forum here,, but, without IH mechanics who worked and kept them going, who else would know what could be interchanged, and make a performer in the fields, or on the pulling tracks, using 100% IH parts, and a bit of technology. The potential for the red tractors as far as the engine parts are concerned, I think IH has some of the best performance parts options, if one chose to look in that direction.. So, many options,, it is like working on a Rubix cube, trying to make all the pieces come together. LOL. What do ya think? ChadS

ChadS, You don"t need to apoligize for posting here rather than the pullers forum. After all, we are talking Farmall here, and learning what components from different IH engines will mix and match just might help all of us keep our old iron running, even if we are not into pulling. There is never anything wrong with getting a few more "free" ponies.
