I have been clutch starting my A in 4th gear. It starts just fine, but I was wondering if anyone ever had any problems doing this. Seems like there might be a lot of pressure on the gear teeth. Thanks Craig

The load on the gear teeth is limited by the traction on the ground. You notice one tire spins backwards as you try to start the tractor.

You are putting a lot more load on the gear teeth spinning the wheels while trying to pull a heavy load than you can put on popping the clutch to start the tractor.

Of course, since it is impact loads that break gear teeth, always engage the clutch slowly and you'll never break one.

I’m presuming that by “clutch starting” you are pulling the tractor to get it started. In this case I know of no issues with doing this other than the obvious pain in the neck that getting it started is. I would think that a crank would be easier and a lot quicker as long as it was tuned up!

He could be rolling it down a hill.

The higher the gear you use, the slower the engine is spun over, and the less stress you put on the tranny. I usually "pop-start" the old M in road gear, just for fun.
