I have a W-4 that won't start. It turns over well and there is fuel at the carb. I think it is an electrical problem. Any suggestions on where to start to troubleshoot?

Thanks,

Thanks for all the info. Hopefully I can get a chance to look at it in the next couple of days.

Just bought a W4 that had sat in a barn for 10+ yrs, and had the same problem. Once I changed the points and condenser, it fired right up.

As Rusty says, check the points. When you have those points closed its a good time to turn on the ignition and flick them apart. You should see a spark. If not your electrical problem is before that point. I have had a number of weak coils as well. This can be very frustrating.
By removing a high tension wire you can hold it close to a ground source as a friend turns over the engine. You should see a spark to ground as the engine turns over. (I usually get the friend to hold the wire and I turn it over, but you can lose friends that way)

Can loose friends? I guarantee that the first time you tried to talk me into that one, I'd make sure I was holding your hand while you were cranking that baby over! ;-]

Start by making sure you have electricity to the distributor, if not, trace that wire back to the ignition switch and find the trouble. If there is electricity to the dist., take a look at the contact points, they may have corroded, may have an oily film on them, or may be damp. After that, check the plug wires, and then the spark plugs. This might be the time to do a complete tune-up.Here's a hint, nine time out of ten the culprit will be dirty contact points, rotate the engine until the points are closed, then open them by hand and drag a clean piece of paper through them, you will be surprised by how much dirt there is.
