if you had just got done putting the speed trans back together, it is probably 2nd gear installed backwards on the shaft, please don't ask and we'll leave it at the 1066 was split 3 times for the t/a.

Remembered that the second time this happened I put a hose clamp around the pin to keep it in.

Been a long time, but seems to me I had the same problem about 10 years ago and it was the roll pin (or spring pin) located down towards the top of the transmission cover between the batteries. Seems like it had worked its way part way out of the outside collar and the protruding end was preventing full rotation of the shift linkage.

Jim, sounds like you need to do a little more checking here. Start out by removing the sheetmetal over the dash. Find the 1-2-3-4 linkage, move the shift lever, and check to see if anything is interfering with the linkage. If not, unhook the adjuster that connects the horizontal shaft coming from the shift lever to the vertical shaft going down to the transmission. Try to shift the tractor by turning the vertical shaft by hand. If you still can't get into 3 and 4, you might have a problem under the cover, since 1 and 2 are shifted by one shift cam, and 3 and 4 are shifted by another shift cam. Lets hope it isn't that, since the whole fuel tank/steering column assembly needs to be removed to get the shift cover off.
