Well, I finally got her running this afternoon...I think the timing is off still, as when I brought number 1 piston up to TDC the timing gear for the injection pump and the idler gears marks were 3 teeth off...Not sure if this is the way it should be but book says they supposed to be dead center...Reason I think it's still off is when you start it, it smokes black a good bit, then no smoke when running at idle..almost hard to tell it's running...I may be able to fine tune by twisting the pump a little bit...The pump is held onto the gear by 3 bolts, so it ain't yo yo proof as I found this one to be off 1/3 rd turn.....

Hi, great news. Like I said it was about 1972 when Dad and I changed one on a 434D which has same engine as B414D.

Hi, if my memory is correct and this is from 35 years ago, the drive shaft for the injection pump has a key in the shaft that goes into the timing gear. So there is no way for it to be out of time by 180 degrees unless the key was not put in the shaft. There should be a couple of lines stamped in the timing gear cover by the studs that hold the injection pump on. If the previous owner had scratched a marked for the exact location of the pump before removal it could have been re-installed to the original position and the timing should have been good.

If you can find the two stamped marks on the timing cover set the mark on the pump to half way between as a starting point.

Are you positive you have all the air out of the injector lines ? When you loosen the lines to the injectors is this fuel squirting out every time the engine is cranked?

If injector pump is timed to fast it will kick back on the starter and if it is to slow it will be hard to start and smoke a lot and will blow white smoke out the exhaust when attempting to start.

Good luck

It looks like he pulled the pump off without removing the timing cover...I may also loosen the pump mounting bolts and twist the pump will cranking it and see if that makes any difference..Also it looks like he replaced the pump with a Delphi unit..Not sure about the key for the Delphi units....Will know more in the AM.....

Hi, just did a google on CAV and came up with this picture of look a like CAV pump at:

There doesn't appear to be a nut on drive shaft so maybe my memory is not as good as I thought but I do remember it would only fit in the timing gear the proper way. In other words it was yo yo proof.

Good luck

Hi, the timing cover that has to be removed is on the front side on the rad side then you take the nut off and drive the shaft out of the timing gear.

My memory maybe incorrect, I could be confused with Bosch pump from 454. It could have a three bolt flange coupling to the injector pump but it would only fit in the proper place.

Is your lift pump working properly. It should squirt fuel a couple feet at the inlet pipe to the injector pump.

Good luck
