Mornin' Everyone,

So, what I do is buy a used Char-Lynn power steering system from a salvage yard. Salvage yard says it is off an M, but it will sure work on a H as well..... WRONG!

Boy!, have I ever got a lot of parts left over!. The only thing that worked was the darned torque motor.

Then, I can't wait; just gotta see if that torque motor works since it is out of a junk yard and all. Yes, it works fine, but it seems like it is starting to "jerk".

Hmmmmm, really should have put some oil back in the steering sector first. What with the weight of that loader and all..... ..... :>)

Okay, one small leak at a new swivel coupler and adjust that proportioning valve and we are good to go.

The jerking that you are talking about is because you eather have the supply line and return line crossed up or you or someone has taken the torque motor apart and did not get it back to gether correctlly. The motor has to be timed correctlly or it will jerk. The timing is in the way that you reassemble the openings and gears internally.

GOOD LUCK

That valve looks like a simple manual diverter.
If you divert too much flow to the power steering motor you probably don't have a return to the reservoir in that line so it lugs the engine down with nowhere to put the oil. There's probably smarter automatic priority valves out there that will put the oil to the steering motor on demand and allow full flow to the implement when there is no steering input.

Hi Lee,

What you say makes a lot of sense and the more I think about it, the more I think you're right.

Harley'83 says his properity valve is a 4-port valve with a port that dumps to the tank. This sounds more reasonable to me.

Although this one seems to work just fine, I'm just a little disappointed in this feature of the switch-over. Heck, I wanted the real fast loader plus the power steering too.

I'll have to do a little research and see if I can find a better divider valve.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know,

Allan

Is there a difference using a flow control valve vs a priority valve or is there a difference in the open center system between the 2 types of valves? Also, what do you have to pay for a used torque motor in a salvage yard back there? In may area, Washington State, there are not that many salvage yards. I found a used torque motor but they wanted $245 for it and it looked like it might have been drug in there from the mid west.

Hi,

Perhaps you are right, I just don't know as I'm really a dummy when it comes to this stuff.

This valve needs to be adjusted out. I guess it is really just an " adjustable divider" of some sort.

If I move the handle down to "0" the loader works faster than it ever did with that Farmhand 12gpm pump at the PTO, but then I don't have much power steering. On the other hand, if I set the valve up around 4.5 or 5, the engine starts laboring because it is shoving all the oil to that torque motor. Dunno.....maybe I'm using the wrong valve; it does work great where I've got it set tho.

The $245 for a used torque motor sounds about right as they are somewhere around $500 new. I can't believe the muscle that this little motor can put out. It is only about 3" in diameter.

Allen,
Look in the salvage yards for a M or H with the original priority valve, It sends fluid to the steering first in a metered amount and just give it what it needs. I have one on my SMTA, but ya cant have it!! lol Has a spring in the valve and also gives full hydraulics to the system. Have you thought that maybe your steering motor is worn out and needs more to work than it should?

Looks like you did a great job. I hope it works well for you.

(First photo scared me for a second....looks like it's connected into the gas tank. Ha)

Hi John,

Yes, bad angle on the picture. :>)

I wanted that proportioning valve tucked up under the hood so it is out of sight. The tractor is gonna look odd enough the way it is with all those black hydraulic lines running back to the tank. I'll see if I can get another shot when I get all her clothes back on.

Maybe one day I can take the time to plumb this thing into the belly tank as it should be.

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Allen,

Remember the quick connectors on my M to go back and forth from the loader tank to the on-board tank on the tractor? Their may be a problem with plumbing it into your belly pump for a reservoir. The belly pump may not be large enough on it’s own to hold enough oil for the loader. If that turns out to be true, then you will need to go back to the tank on the loader but if you couple the two together, the fluid levels in the two will try to equalize. This may cause the supply tank on the H to overflow.

Just trying to prevent your having a mess someday…

Drats I was sure he had plumbed it into the gas tank - what a great hydaulic reservior that would be. Good capacity, ease to fill, and monitor level. Can't see any downside to that arrangement. LOL Dick Davis

Hi Dick,

That darned porportioning valve doesn't work like I thought it would. Yes, it guarantees flow to the steering all the time, but it takes away from the rest of the system.

I thought total flow was available to the rest of the system if no power steering was called for. It ain't the case with this particular valve, so it requires a very fine adjustment to get it divided out accordingly.

But, it does really work sweet.
