I put a carb kit in my "51 M last night. The kit came from the CaseIH dealer. In the kit was a fiber cylinder that is the same diameter as the lower metering needle packing nut opening in the bowl. Is this the packing for that needle? I installed it as the packing and installed the packing nut as tight as I could get it, but the needle doesn"t feel quite tight enough. Should I add something else as packing? Also, the directions state that the float should 1 5/16 at the highest point above the casting. I"m assuming that they mean when the upper portion of the carb is upside down and the float is in the closed position. Is that correct? Thanks for the help.

That packing goes under the drip hole plug -- you should have a new plug too, although the old one can be used if you remove it carefully. The main jet packing should be a flexible plastic-like material with a hole in it.

Thanks, that's the info I needed. Now, since I removed the old packing and none was provided in the kit, do you know where I can get the correct packing?

The last carb I rebuilt had it in the kit, from Case-IH. You might try getting the individual part, but if not in stock, shipping will cost more than the part will: 24703DA or 67266DX for the jet packing, 60947D for the drip packing and plug. A lot of the suppliers sell carb kits, too numerous to mention. You might try Steel Wheel Ranch 785-548-7437, or Carter and Gruenwald 866-327-6255.

Correct on the float measurement.

And is is important to get the floats straight so they don't rub the side of the lower casting.
