Just bought a 340 U. Everything (well, except brakes and starter) seems to work pretty well, with the exception of the TA, which doesn't do anything. I've been told it could be broken (bad news) or need adjustment (good news). Can anyone suggest any troubleshooting techniques for TAs to get me started to figure out what might be the problem? I ordered a set of manuals, but they haven't arrived yet.

Thanks

Well, from my experience it’s use it or loose it. On my farm no one was shy about using the TA on the 560. It was used for square bailing to get the right ground speed, slow down on the end of the field when plowing or cultivating, for more power in a tough spot, and on and on. In 12000 hours on a gasser it was replaced once. When it was sold it was still working. I’ve got a Diesel I bought with the TA out and fixed it 21 years ago. Still work to this day about 4000 hours later.

from what i've seen and read here when the t/a goes south, thats probably where it should stay.i have a 460u and i have never pulled back on mine.i figure i don't work mine that hard to need it so why mess with a good thing.they are expensive to fix and you have to split the tractor,in 2 places if i remember right.

I have a 350 utility with a bad TA. The TA has two clutches, a friction clutch, and an overrunning clutch. The adjustment of the TA lever will adjust the friction clutch. The more common failure of the TA is with the overrunning clutch. Fixing this will require splitting the tractor in two places, removing the TA unit, and removing the overrunning clutch. The best repair for the overrunning clutch is to replace the clutch itself. A new overrunning clutch from an aftermarket supplier costs $120 at my local IH dealer. Unless you really need the TA feature, most people will not repair the unit. Complete rebuilt TA units typcially run about $600-700.
