I saw a 5488 that is very unique. Unlike all other 88 series tractors that I've seen it only has a single door on the left hand side. Which opens out like the magnums. The interior is also odd the shift levers have a very short throw. The park break is built into the range selector. It is all on the right side in a console. Anyone have any idea what the deal was?

range lever gained park position on the 86 series. 88's they went to the right console. And if anyone ever saw a 7288 2+2, you would have to argue that case did not design the magnum on their own after seeing the rearend under that tractor, there was one near london,oh for sale a couple years back they knew what they had 1 of 19 that survived the buyout, asking price was $54500. That is not a misprint.

I have ran the tractor. A friends dad owns it. I don't believe that it was a full power shift but I'll have to ask my friend. Magnum doesn't appear anywhere on it. It says 5488. I don't know a lot of particulars on it.

Wait a minute fellas the word that I got was there were no 88 changes in the Magnum because the 88 series was the last tractor out of Rock Island. The Magnum was supposed to be from the ground up tractor by Case/IH built in Racine drive train and all. What he might have is a prototype that would have been built if IH continued production. Due to financial contraints the changes would have been subtle.2 cents

Don, I'm not going to get into the discussion as to what this guy claims to have seen (I don't belive anything that I haven't seen in person), but just wanted to let you know that the Magnum transmission/rear end was based off of the IH 5088 series. The 5088's had three ranges, which were collar-shifted, requiring the clutch pedal to be pushed in. They had six speeds which were shifted by engaging hydraulic clutch packs, meaning that they could be shifted on the go. All of this gave you an 18-speed partial powershift. When the Magnum came along, they just replaced the shift collars for the range gears with clutch packs, and it became an 18-speed full powershift. The MX's being built today still use this same basic 5088 transmisssion.

Wait a minute. What are you comparing this to?

The 5088 series doors swung to the rear. The last ones had only a left-hand door due to OSHA.

The 5088 series shifter is supposed to be on the right side, with the park lock on the range selector.

If it has a range selector, it doesn't have an 18 speed powershift.

What you saw is simply a late 5488, not the mythical 5588 prototype that became the Magnum.

5488 1DOOR CAB SIGHTING?? in reply to Novel Idea Guy, 10-29-2004 09:28:54
Where did you get this idea that osha mandated a 1 door cab on the late model 88 series???

When did the 5488 ever have the park lock feature built into the shifting lever too?

You must be thinking of the MAGNUM series or you own a pre-MAGNUM IH prototype (which I very highly doubt.....)

I don't want to argue, but I don't believe I have seen an 88 series with any doors that swung to the rear. We don't own one, but have looked at some at auction in the last couple of years, and I remembered being disappointed that IH still hadn't figured out to swing that door to the rear.

Definately, where did you see the tractor? I would love to know where it was at so I could see it some day.

You often wonder what happens to those goofy prototypes. Our local IH dealer a few years ago had a prototype tractor that had an 88 rearend and cab but had an 86 series front end with no numbers and markings some farmer came in and bought it. Up to a few years ago I used to see it around. I remember looking it over and I think it had prototype stamped in the serial number plate. I had to laugh because someone is going to get on this website and say I've got this tractor and everyone will say he's crazy there was no such thing.

Could the golden goose have been found? Evidently this tractor, if it"s the one, disappeared when IH sold out. Please tell the general area that you saw this tractor and the shape it"s in.

That was IH's prototype tractor that was going to be the new series to replace the 88 series. It had the 18 speed full powershift transmission that got released in the Magnums. If you don't mind me asking where did you see the tractor?

It does not have a full power shift transmission.
