I am rebuilding a 756 with a D 310 engine - I have split the tractor and removed the rear main crankshaft seal. The crankshaft has grooves in it (about 1/32" deep) and someone told me to buy a seal with a cap that fits over the crankshaft (for the seal to run on) - is this true and where can I buy one -- thanks

Have you removed your old seal from the aluminum seal housing yet? If not, measure the relation of the seal to the housing. The seal can be installed in one of three positions- 1/16" out of the housing (I belive this is where it was from the factory), flush with the housing, or 1/16" into the housing. A special tool that a Case-IH dealer would have will easily install the seal to one of these three depths. If you have already removed the seal without noting it's location, you'll just have to make a guess and hope for the best, or get a speedy-sleeve to fit on the crank for the seal to ride on.
