I really have gone through my manual on this, but cannot figure out how to change, or add, transmission fluid; or add oil to the differential on am M. I started with changing the motor oil and now have decided to put in fresh fluids etc. all the way around before winter sets in. thanks for any info. This should be a no -brainer, I just can't see where to do it.

Is it wrong for a man to love fooling around with his tractor? My wife thinks I'm just plain nuts. Thanks for all the help by the way.

Another tip: If you don't know much about the tractor, or the last time the oil was changed, fill the rear end and tranny full of diesel and take it for a short spin. Don't do anything to put a lot of stress on it, obviously, but the diesel won't hurt anything, and it will flush out any crud that has accumulated over the years. If it comes out real dirty do it a second time.

When adding gear lube back into the transmission, first add a quart or so to the belt pulley, if you have one, (remove square plug on top of assembly) and then finish filling using the opening on top of the transmission cover.

And brace yourself.....as you no doubt already know from the manual it takes a LOT of oil.

The transmission and differential share the same lubricant.

There is a drain plug on the rear of the tractor in the middle just above the swinging drawbar. This will drain both the transmission and differential. On the top of the transmission cover there is a plug to the right of the gear shift lever (has a square recess in it for a socket extension) where you fill the transmission and differential. There is a small pipe plug on the clutch side of the tractor just behind the clutch petal about 1/3 of the way from the bottom to top that is the level plug. When the rear-end grease starts to flow out of there you have enough.

Also, if the M is like the H, there is a small drain plug on the front of the tranny to drain all oil that is "trapped" in the tranny and will not drain from the big plug at the back. Larry
