After a motor job, how do you re tork the head (hot or cold) how long should you run it first, and why?

I guess I'm looking for the whole skinny.

Thanks Bob

Bob,

Not a good idea to ever torque any bolts when hot or warm. When they cool and shrink they will be too tight.

Bob - I'm sure you will get other differing opinions. Here's what I like to do: Once the head has been torqued down I start the engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature. Then retorque the head bolts once more.

Don't think it matters much whether you let the engine cool back down before retorquing. What's important is that all the bolts are retorqued evenly and at the same temperature.

Different people have different oppinions but This the way I learned in trade school. The first time get it heated up real good make sure thermastat opens and all. Then let her cool completly like over night. Then back off one head bolt nut and retorque it to spec and go to the next one and so on. If you try to retorque them hot or by not backing them off first you can do break bolts pretty easy. JON
