M Farmall engine number questions

I"ve got a Farmall M, missing the serial plate. I think that the engine is not original, but I"m confused between the casting letter on the engine(which appears to be P) should be 1946, but the engine serial stamping is FBKM6xxME (can"t remember exact number, but it"s in the early 600"s). Can anybody help me date the engine? What does the ME at the end mean? Would there be any differences if it is a 1939 that would help me tell (it does have the tall oil filter housing)? Thanks in advance!

The first M engine built would have been 501. The E stands for 8000 ft altitude, M for low speed gears, EXCEPT that M should not be an engine suffix as the M should be on your missing chassis serial plate--but, the serial of the very earlier tractors were on the frame rail, don't remember which one, so you might check. It is possible that the early engines had the same letter codes as the chassis, as both engine serial and chassis serial should match on the first few hundred tractors. Look for other casting codes on other parts of your tractor -- does transmission cover have a slot that runs to the rear, or is it flat? If it has the slot then the tractor should be a 39 or 40 (I or J). However, I can't explain the P on the engine, provided it follows the month*day*year format.

The tractor itself appears to be a 1942 by the L casting codes and the normal transmission cover. I had suspected the engine was switched because of a different shade of paint. The casting code looks like 6.3.P., but the engine is definitely FBKM6xxME. Would the part number of the block be of use or were they all alike? Thanks Again!
