A tell tale sign, except for late late M's: band brakes. Your tractor should have band brakes, not disk brakes. You will be able to tell by looking at the brake covers, If it is removable by 5 or 6 bolts, they are disk.
LIKELY: Often, when an M was overhauled, it was given the Super M or 450 overhaul kit. I've heard reports, even, of dealerships doing overhauls on M's and placing Super M decals on them. For the most part, the increased power M would be a Super M, power wise, but it does not label it as a Farmall Super M. Ask him why he calls it a Super M, and check serial numbers and any tell tale signs. On the other hand, he may just have the year mixed up. Good luck.

There were no Super M's in 1951, in fact there were 30000+ regular M's produced in 1952, according to Guy Fay's data book. Ask what the serial number prefix is, if FBK it's an M, SM is a Super M.

I think you may be correct I have a book that lists Super M's for 1952 but only has listings for regular M's for 1951
