Hey guys, can anyone tell me where to get a hood already cut for an alternator conversion, or how to rig the alternator so i dont have to cut the hood? the latter would be best. thanks!

i have one i'd be more than happy to trade for one that isn't cut!
the fellow who owned the tractor before me cut it. actually, the hood doesn't even need to be cut; it will fit, but just barely...lots of posts in the archives about this.

Had a guy rebuild my 6V generator into a 12V generator with a regulator. Avoided the hood problem all together plus at least still looks original.

OK. Since someone is on the subject, my M has an alternator and I have found that it will not work properly if it is touching the hood. Yet, when I looked at Little John's photos of his alternator it appears that the alternator housing is touching the block. Why, oh why, does the hood screw up my alternator? If it was shorting out on the hood wouldn't it also short out against the block?-- I have to run the tractor without the hood on.

MH,

The case of that alternator should be at an electrical ground level. Are you sure the hood isn't pulling the little field plug away from the spade, grounding the hot lead or some such thing?

Dunno,

Allan

"Thanks for thinking about it. But I've got the biggest "dunno" myself. I've looked at it a million ways -- even had an electronics engineer think about it --"dunno." I know it just runs with the hood off.

I just put a Hitachi alternator on mine and it fits real nice on the original bracket. I even have room to adjust the belt, which I didn't have with the old one. It's cheap and works great. There's no seperate voltage regulator, it's built into the alternator. Post back if your interested and I'll give more details. It was posted here in the archives.

Could you please send me an off-line email at russell@wavecomputers.net as I would like what information you might care to share in your conversion on your H? I would like to do the same on my H but would like some lessons learned if you have some. From your post the process seemed to be fairly simple. Thanks, Hal

I didn't get what tractor you are talking about, but almost surely you can do the conversion without cutting the hood. Awhile back someone kindly posted a picture of an alternator on an H or M. When I find it I'll put it on here.

I just put the picture under Parts & Pieces in the Gallery section on the left. It is titled Farmall H or M - Alternator Installation.

I installed a Delco in a similar fashion on my "H". I turned the old generator bracket upside down and added a long bolt for the alternator to sit on. Just took a few washers to get the position right.

Good luck. I'm sure others on the board can give more and better advice.

If you decide to go with the smaller japanese alternator, I have a "new" (rebuilt) one that I got from NAPA. It has not been used and is still in the box. I decided to use the Delco.....no particular reason.

Hang on....I've had some inquiries about the alternator and I will have to sell it to the persons who made the first offer. I wish I had a bunch of them to sell at a good price! Thanks to you all for your interest.
