While looking over my '51 Farmall M, I have been finding old small metal tags with mostly single-digit numbers and a letter, all separated by a "period" or raised character, with the ends of the tag rivited onto the part. An example might read "6*22*W" Any clues what these referred to and how to cross reference these?

Kevin, Bob has listed the letter code which tells you the year. Actually the little tag you mention is not a tag in itself, but a part of the casting. This is achieved by screwing the date code strip to the pattern mold, which is the positive, then transfered to the sand mold which is the negative and back to the actual casting which is the positive.

They indicate the casting's birthday, day, month, and year, with the year using the following code:

1938-H 1947-Q 1957-C
1939-I 1948-R 1958-D
1940-J 1949-S 1959-E
1941-K 1951-W 1960-F
1942-L 1952-X 1961-G
1943-M 1953-Y 1962-H
1944-N 1954-Z
1945-O 1955-A
1946-P 1956-B

I believe, upon closer inspection, you will find that they are not actual tags, but rather, are part of the actual casting. A tag was put on the original pattern, which was pressed into the sand mold for the cast iron casting, and the impression of the tag is reproduced on the actual casting.
