ive got a 706 diesel that i bought a year ago. it had a rough life in the few years before i bought it. it got a new motor,and the wires going to the alternator lost the clips on the end. it has a delco l0 si alternator on it. the alternator has the big stud on it for the big wire, and it has two smaller plugs on it. well the tractor harness only has two wires, a large dark brown or black wire and a small yellow wire. ive cut the harnes back to where the glow plug wires go out, and there are only two wires in it. do i need to run another wire besides what is in the harness, or is there supposed to be only two wires. thanks

One wire alt ernators have two major problems, they require much higher rpms to start charging and they are much more expensive.

They are ok on high speed engines like on boats, but not on slow turning engines on old tractors.

The three wire hookup on the internal regulator alt is just not that difficult and Delco made jillions of them.

Nate,

The R 1 or 1 spade is for an idiot light or a separate switch to 12v. It turns the alternator on. If you don't attach a light or switch this connection will run down the battery when parked and won't let you shut off the engine. I have a 641 and a JD done both ways.

The F 2 or 2 spade is hot all the time and is best connected directly to the large battery post on the back of the alternator. In a one wire alternator this connection is built into the regulator.

The large post on the back of the alt is hooked directly to the battery or to the battery connection on the starter, whichever is shorter. Use at least a 10 gagewire for this. The other wires don't need to be larger than 16 ga

Forget the part about not letting you shut down the engine, this is only with gas engines.

Okay, that means that you are internally regulated and really don't need the third wire.

The big 10-gauge wire should be your hot wire for the big output post (Test it first to make sure it has 12 volts, when unhooked). The yellow wire is the 'exciter' circuit from your ignition.

Bet’cha if all is well within the alternator, if you hook that little yellow wire to the outermost spade at the rectangular plug, you're gonna be back in business.

Thats what I always loved a 1 wire alternator simple to hookup no way to be confused.

Nate,

I've never understood those Delco designations on the alternators. Is the little plug on the alternator square or is it rectangle shaped?

And is this the same as your old alternator had?

Allan,

The Delco plugs come in at least two different versions, like this(-- --) and this (I I). I believe the first one is for an external regulator but not sure. I know the second one is for the internal reg.

You're right, that is how they are laid out; guess I wasn't making myself clear and was just a lookin' at the physical properties of the outside of the plug. :>)

Sometimes my mouth and my old brain don't connect as they should. :>)

allan, this is the alternator that was on it when i got the tractor. as for the plug it is rectangular with two prongs. thanks

Guys, it's like Leland said. Running anything but a 1 wire alternater in this day and age is like running 10.00x20 tube type tires on your grain truck. Sure they'll get you there, but if they go down you have to have a mechanic, an engineer, two laborers, seven Mexican couriers and a great big wallet to get going again. Go with a one wire alternater, back to the battery, everything else off the hot post to the switches if you have any, and forget it. Works great, Harley
