Can anyone tell me what model tractors PTO seal will interchange with a 364? Went to napa and a local tractor parts here (not International) and thier parts books don't list the 364 for the seals. HELP

Hi Dave,

If you get the old seal out, clean it up real good and there should be a C/R number stamped somewhere into the outter edge of the thing.

NAPA can then cross this number to their parts listings. I've never ran across a seal yet that they could not match.

If push comes right up against shove, they can take the physical measurements of the old seal itself and cross it to their parts that way.

Problem is I am using the tractor right now and hate to tear the seal out and have the tractor down till someone comes up with a seal. There is no International parts dealers in this area so i'm kind of stuck, thier parts books list a whole mess of models but mine isn't there for some reason, that's why i was trying to find another model that uses the same seal. Thanks

Parts CD shows three different IH numbers for the PTO shaft seal. Likely all interchange, just different brands.

Part nos.

Ok I had napa cross reference the seal numbers you gave me and they all came back to the same seal as far as napa has, I went ahead and got it and low and behold I drained the tractor and removed the old seal and they arn't the same, it's the right size but the one in the tractor is twice as as thick and has a rubber seal and a felt wiper in it, the one i got from napa is just a single rubber seal, back to square one except now I have the tractor disabled, took the seal that came out of the tractor to napa and they couldn't match it now what, put two of thier seals in back to back, now i'm in a bind.

The new seals are almost never the same as the originals. Improvements in seal technology have about gotten rid of the double thick seals except in cases of extreme service. All the letter series Farmalls are like that. You have a seal about an inch thick with two leather lip seals and maybe a felt wiper in there. You get a single lip seal for the new one. Some folks like to put in two of the new seals. I've never done than, only installing one of the new ones and have never had a problem. As long as the new seal fits the holder with the correct press fit and is the right diameter for the shaft you will be fine. Position the new seal in the holder so that it runs on a good part of the shaft where there are no grooves worn. You should be fine with what NAPA gave you.

Ok I didn't know that, the seal I took out had a neopreme seal and a felt seal toward the outside, I'll try the one seal if it leaks i guess i could order another and put it in on the outside or do you think it might be a good idea to go ahead and install two that way dirt can't get to the inside seal?

Well, like I said, some folks like to use 2 of the new seals to replace the old thick seal. You'll have to make up your own mind on that. One disadvantage to using two seals is that if the one on the inside holds perfectly, the outside one will just run dry and wear out quickly, but it won't do any harm.

Ok I'll just stick one in there and hope, think i'll go ahead and have them order another one so i'll have one on hand. Now to get this thing back to work. Thanks

I think I recall you said you drained the transmission fluid to change the seal. As a note, if you have to do it again, it works on the letter series tractors to park them nose down on a slope and change the PTO seal without draining the transmission. I did this on my MD and lost nary a drop of fluid. Don't know how this would work on your tractor, but it would be worth a try.

That might work never thought of that but it's logical, I had to change the oil anyway it was who knows how old and probably had a little water in it, but anyway i got it in and ran it for a while and it dosn't leak, i'll get it back to work tomorrow got to break up about 10 acres and then disk it if it isn't to wet may have to wait for sat.

Thanks Haas, I'll check Mon. and see if napa has one of these seals, that way I can compare them before i pull the seal. You were a big help.

If you take the seal out and take it(or the holder it goes in) to a Motion Industries bearing supply house, chances are they will have the seal in stock. If not, chances are they can get it in a day or two.
