I need to remove the slack in my super a steering. How hard is it to rebuild the steering box, worm gears, etc.? All advise greatly appreciated.

If you have an older A with the vertical shaft that has a square end sticking out of the bottom of the steering box, it is probrobly worn bad at that spot . Also, the keyway on the shaft that holds the sector gear is also worn. On one of
mine, I shimmed the square shaft with pieces of a
tin can. and fixed the keyway. On the other, I
replaced the square shaft with a shaft from a newer model tractor, 100 or 140or something, don't
remember which, and replaced the steering arm
also. this method also requires machine work on the sector gear keyway ie. cut new keyway 180
degrees fom the old one. Any questions, E-mail me , my address isn't hid , I have a great junk
mail catcher.

This was a rather drastic solution, and I"m not advocating it, but this is what I did. :-)

First check the pitman arm on the bottom of the gearbox it might just be loose and then take up the play on the tierods. That just may be all that is loose. The round ends on the joints can be ground with a small 4in grinder to remove the eggshapes as they are probably shaped now use a calipers when grinding and you can remove lots of play also. Taking apart the gearbox is last but it is easy to rebuild with the bushings and seals and maybe new bearings. The price on a worm and gear is not cheap.

Easiest way is to take axle off, then the bottom housing of the steering box (axle pivot). Check for loose or worn keyways on the shaft and secter gear, and worn bearings.
