Mornin' Everyone,

Darnit! I'm gettin' itchy! All my parts for the little hydraulic switch-over are 500 miles away in Omaha and should be in here tomorrow.

Can't wait to pull this trick off; been using Hs and Ms since forever under loaders with their old Armstrong Power Steering. :>)

Me thinks this is gonna make me feel as good as the day I converted that old two wheel drive pickup over to a 4 wheeler; that was 25 years ago and I still use 'er daily. :>)

A good one to ya,

Allan

OK here goes.

My M has Behlen power steering on it. My dad put the kit on the tractor in the ‘60’s ‘cause he had a JD picker mounted on it when the loader wasn’t. He made a tank to fit where the belly pump was. I’ 95% sure the pump came as part of the kit.

The kit consisted of the pump ahead of the distributor, a priority valve, and hoses. The pump number that you mentioned sounds familiar, but the tractor is now 14 miles away from me at home so I won’t be able to check it for a couple of hours. The pump has two hoses on it one for suction (3/4” I think”) and one outlet (1/2” I think) which goes to the priority valve. From there hoses go to the power steering unit and a double acting valve mounted on a bracket attached to the belt pulley housing. Return lines are tee back into the suction line at the bottom of the tank.

If you would like detailed pictures and don’t mind looking at a tractor truly in its working clothes, I can post some later this evening. Either post here or Allen has my e-mail.

As far as functionality of the pump, mine works great, and have never regretted the conversion. I have a DuAll loader on it, move round bales weighing up to 1400# and can steer it with one finger if I want. Schwartz wide front with 235 X 16” pickup tires on the front and 15.5 38 tires on 14” 560 wheels on the back and 2 sets of wheel weights (no fluid). The loader is slower than a snail when it’s below 0 F till it warms up, but above that it works fairly fast, but not as fast as a PTO driven pump.

Let me know if you want more info or have more questions.

Hi Capt',

Wow! If you could post some pictures, that would be so great! I am totally in the dark; I just kinda have a foggy idea of how it all should work.

I wouldn't even attempt this project if it weren't for you guys being here that I knew I could fall back on.

Do you think that in Rusty's case, that pump could actually be pushing that much oil thru that steering motor alone without a proprietary valve? The excess oil is just dumping back into the tank?

Thanks for your efforts,

Allan

Allen,

I don‘t know if I can post pictures (never done it), but if not will e-mail them to you but will not be until after 2:00 central time.

I’m not sure how much oil can flow through the power steering unit. My take on the priority valves purpose was to make sure that the power steering unit got oil flow even if there was another demand that required less pressure.

I also got to thinking that I’ve seen some smaller pumps than the one I have on my M on some tractors. Rusty’s might be one of those; hopefully he will post one so that we can see.

I should add that the pump on my M looks identical to the pumps used on the SMTA, etc.

Now Allan, we have allowed you to get by with a few exagerations on this forum in the past but... Where in Nebraska do you live that Omaha is 500 miles away? My nickel Dick Davis

Hi Dick,

Yes, your right and I should have been more careful. Sorry, lost my head on that one.

Just looked it up in the atlas; our town is actually 513 miles from Omaha plus I gotta go the 10 miles down into town, so that brings us to a grand total of 523.

The darned miles just seem to go on forever out here. :>)

If the need arises and I drive like a madman, I can be in Rapid City, SD in 90 minutes. :>)

Darn it, now you have me curious wondering if I might do the same thing. My 50 H has already got Behlen power steering, with the pump mounted ahead of the distributor. Live hydraulics on the #31 loader would be really nice, maybe even a hydraulic bucket? Anyone know if that Behlen pump will handle it?

Rusty,

I've been talking to some pretty sharp ol' boys about this and they say they have been doing this modification for years and years. Heck, all you would have to do is add that proprietary valve, right? Or, do you already have it?

Also, I was told yesterday that your Behlen pump was one of the original models built for the Super H.

I dunno, I'm just going by blind faith in my fellow man in this project.

All I have right now is the pump and two hoses that go to the steering unit. Gonna start looking though. Wish I'da thought of this earlier this summer, don't want this rig down when the snow flies.

Rusty,

Was that pump part of a 'power steering kit'? If so, you might not have pump enough, 'cause I think those PS pumps sold in the kits were only a 3.5gpm pump.

I don't think there is any way you could push 10gpm straight thru that steering motor without an exhaust dump, could you?

I dunno.....

I don't know either, the power steering was already on this H when I bought it. I know the pump says Behlen on it. Don't know much else, I'll have to see if there are some numbers on it.

The pump says Behlen 8011-? The hoses come off the top. Is this strictly for power steering?

Rusty,

Ya gots to remember that you are talking to a real dummy here. :>)

But, I think if you only have two hoses; one into the the steering motor and one out back to the pump, it sure sounds like just a power steering pump to me.....

But like I say, I'm really a dumb ol' farmer when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Wish someone else here would jump in and help us.

Casey,

I can't hear your pump from here of course, but they do that occasionally. A loud rapppin, rattlin' sound?

Keep your money in your pocket.

well right now the head on the pump is ok so it will cost about $3-$400. if the head goes bad it'll run $1500-$2000. i think i'll buy the $400 insuance now.
