The cover plate you mention is for moving the shifter over to reverse operation configurations like cotton picker or forklift.

I am guessing that the TA does not work and somebody removed the shift lever for it. The shifter is about two feet long and connects to several bellcranks on the left side of transmission. It sould look similar to the IPTO lever located on the other (right) side of tractor operator's position.

Go to the photo section and study comparable models. Better yet get an operator's manual.

All the TA i've seen, the lever was on the side of the tractor. You just pulled the lever while you are moving...hope this helps.

The TA lever is on your left while sitting in the seat. (The PTO handle is on your right.) If this lever is actually missing, it could mean a previous owner of the tractor did a TA-ectomy (eliminate the TA mechanism with a straight through drive). You might also want to get the owners manual for your 300; it will show the linkages between the clutch and TA and how to adjust them.

Thanks Evan there is no lever on the left side although it looks like there might have been at one time, directly above the axle. interesting why would some one eliminate it. just cusious

Well, the mechanical TA drives in the IH tractors of the same era as your 300 are notorious for failing in the low range. This may have happened to the previous owner and instead of fixing the TA, had it eliminated. To be sure, you can take the small top cover off the TA housing (this cover starts close to where the start motor sticks back) and see if you see the planetary and clutch directly below the cover. If you just see a shaft, then the TA has truely been eliminated. If the mechanism is still present, there are three possibilities: it was welded solid, it is still in its broken state (just operates in high range with no lever to operate it),or if you are super lucky it actually still works but just needs the linkage added back again.
