What are the advantages or disadvantages of converting from 6 volt to a 12 volt system?

Some more advantages, 12 volt lights are easy to find, 6 volt ones aren't. If you ever run equipment lights off tractor system, like I do with baler, most are 12 volt. Generally when you go to 12 volt you also change to an alternator and they put out a lot more juice if you do run lots of lights. Folks say the 6 volt system will work just as good as 12 volt if kept up right, heavy battery cables and all. That may be true but with a long run, like from a battery under the seat to the starter, you need a really heavy cable with 6 volts, not so with 12. I like the way my SMTA starts quickly with the 12 volts. My feeling is that if you are after originality all the way stay with 6 volts, if it is a "user" the 12 volt setup works better. If you do change over you may want to keep the 6 volt parts anyway incase you sell it some day or 6 volt systems come back into use.

Disadvantages, hmm, maybe I’ll think of one later.

Advantages; faster cranking speed, usually quicker starts, can use a battery out of a car or pickup in an emergency, brighter lights, get a 12 Volt negative ground for any accessory equipment like radios, CD players, VCRs, TV’s, Video Games (OK I might be getting a bit carried away :>) )

When I convert mine, I keep the 6-volt coil and use the resistor to drop the voltage. I also use either a starter switch (for a pull rod) or solenoid that has a 12V tap on it that I use to by-pass the resistor to feed the coil full voltage while the starter is running. Really whomps up the spark out of the 6-volt coil giving me a nice hot spark at the plugs while cranking. The time is so short that the electrical parts don’t seem to be affected. On my M I also changed the starter drive to a heavy clutch type instead of the flat coil spring after I broke a couple of springs.

Disadvantages, hmm, only one I can think of is that your tractor is no longer an authentic original.

Dont know of any advantages other than originality,no need to change bulbs or anything else for that matter.
12 volt for me,wasnt too much of an option.6 volt batteries are a little harder to find around here without driving 50 miles each way to get one or pay the price these folks want for them.Plus I know I can jump it off if I ever have to,and itll start easier.I have never burnt up a starter,or have had to change anything other than the occasional bulb, havent fried a coil either. Some say a properly maintained 6 volt is just as good.

I beg to differ about the bulbs, John M!! A 6 volt bulb used in a 12 volt system will be VERY bright for a VERY short time! Just replace the 6 volt ones with the equivalent 12 volt bulb and enjoy.

Fingers dont work with the brain sometimes.Meant the 6 volt bulbs would have to be changed.
