the axle on my wagon has rotted away.I need to make a new one.um. I think I'm way over my head on this one.does anyone know how the inner bering is attached to the wood axel?also does anyone know a web site that can help.any info will help a bunch...jimmy

Need to start with dry wood. Green wood will shrink and loosen.

Warm the bearing and drive it on. Not too hot but even at 200 deg it expands. As I recall, the inside is a straight taper and holds like a Morse taper on a drill press. You need to have a good fit before you assemble.

If I remember right, you cut the new one out of green oak or hickory, soak it overnight, and then the iron part is heated and put on with a hammer.

The wagon axles were actually turned on a lathe if the wagon was factory built, and this one looks like it was. They heated the bearing part some and drove it on, then diped it in water. If done right, there is no way to remove it without breaking something. ken

There is also a big lag screw in the end of the axel holding the skien to the axel
