Is there any meaningful difference in 15/40 diesel engine oil and 15/40 gas engine oil?

about 4 or 5 years ago epa had the diesel fuel altered.oil companies had to come out wih a compatable oil to take care of the soot that got into the crankcase.i would never use any gas engine oil in a diesel engine.my 2 cents

Far as I know, 15W/40 is a diesel oil that meets gasoline engine specs. Again, far as I know there is no 15W/40 gasoline only oil. It is ok to run 15W/40 in gasoline tractors, but it is not recommended for modern automotive engines, as most automotive recommendations are for 5W/30, 10W/30, and in the case of Ford, 5W/20. For 70's and maybe 80's cars, perhaps 15W/40 is OK. I used to run 20W/50 in a 70's Chevy. Not going to argue with anyone who has a different opinion, because I ain't no expert.

By gas engine you do mean gasoline, and not natural gas or propane gas engines.

There are specific oils for natural gas or propane engines but that is mostly oil field or irrigation stuff. I've got a drum of oil for gas engines but I can't remember if it even has an API designation.

And in reference to IH Rob's post, all automobile oils you can buy are detergent unless they specifically state non-detergent and I believe those non-detergent oils that are labelled are labelled API SA

In my experiences, the main difference between Diesel and Gasoline oils is detergent additives. You can use Diesel oil in a gas engine, but keep in mind that the diesel oil has detergents in it. The gas engine manufacturer may not recommend the use of detergent oil. DO NOT run gasoline engine oils in diesels for extended periods. Most gas oils are non-detergent and won't disperse soot very well. In a nutshell, use oil that is designed for the engine it's going in. The days of running 30 wieght in everything you own are long gone. Oil technology has made amazing advances, and the industry can now "tailor" their oils to meet the specific needs of every engine group, even beyond "gas & diesel". Engines are now classified according to their main function or operating requirements, such as pump stations, motorcycle, lawn care, marine, etc. There are specific oils for each of these engines that meet the specific requirements that the application demands. Sorry I got so long winded. Hope this helps, ROB

Rob, i'm going to have to disagree with you there. Every name brand oil company i know of adds Detergent to there oils(unless they specify that its non-detergent). This can be checked on there website.

Look for the API specification that an oil is good for.

API started with grade SA for gasoline engine oil, When I was a kid, it was SC then SD. Now they are up to SL as the latest requirement. If the oil meets only SG then it is an inferior oil to the best being currently produced.

Similarly, diesel oils have a C designation. Shell Rotella T is currently advertising API CI-4.

So if you buy a diesel oil for a gasoline engine and it says CI-4/SG, then it will be OK for diesel but a little less than the best for gasoline engines.

Conversly, if you buy an oil without a "C" rating, it is inadvisable to use it in a diesel engine for an extended period of time. A modern diesel, that is. I bet an MD will do just fine on any gasoline engine oil currently produced.

Farmalls were designed for SA or less grade oils. That is part of the reason they perform so well for so long now, the oils are superior to what the engine was designed to operate with.

Yes.

In a nutshell, Diesel engine oils have additives in them to handle the different combustion contaminants and higher compression ratios of diesel engines. Diesel engine oils are usually higher quality oils in comparison to gasoline engine oils and are generally more expensive. Do not use a gasoline engine oil in a diesel engine, at some time in the future you will (not may) be sorry. As far as I am aware, diesel engine oils are safe to run in gasoline engines, and I do run diesel oils in severe applications like my motorcycle where the transmission and engine share the same lubricant, and gasoline tractors.

Others may have more detailed info they can post.
